It's been a while since I've played an AC game for the reasons pointed out in the article (one or more per year). Many of them, especially all the colonial ones after 3, seemed like they all existed in roughly the same time period, with bland characters.

It's interesting to see that both origins and odyssey are highly rated and it sounds like this article is showing that they are a breath of fresh air to the series.

Anyone that's kept up since 3, care to comment? If I decide to jump back in, should I go straight to odyssey? Start with Origins? Is there a good one between 3 and those?

While it is controversial, Black Flag is an amazing game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But BF was the last game I fully played through. I own Origins on steam, but have not really played it yet. I have talked to a few people that really like Origins and have recommended to me that I play it before buying Odyssey, so I will pass on that recommendation. I can tell you now, the 20 mins I have messed around with Origins does show that the game is at the very least beautiful.

Haven't dug into Odyssey yet but I have heard its like Origins but better so I can't imagine I wont like it and have watched some non story stuff on Twitch.

Origins and Odyssey significantly change the format of the games as looting/crafting becomes far more in depth in them and the combat isn't just block counter block counter like the older AC games. I love the new ones as a long time AC fan

Thats really surprising. Every AC game is the exact same just different location/time period. Go here, kill guy, go here, kill guy... that's been my experience at least. Is the new one anyone...

Speaking as somebody that never really got into AC games (I tend to play them for maybe a couple hours, then go "...a'ight", and drop out; AC2 and Black Flag lasted the longest at maybe 5-6h),...

Speaking as somebody that never really got into AC games (I tend to play them for maybe a couple hours, then go "...a'ight", and drop out; AC2 and Black Flag lasted the longest at maybe 5-6h), Odyssey has grabbed me because:

      • Exploration mode makes it feel less like a checklist. It doesn't hit Breath of the Wild levels of "ooh, what's over there?", but it feels much less tedious.

      • They seem to have thrown in just about every mechanic they can think of. They're not super-deep, but what's there is fun -- from RPG elements to a proto-Nemesis System to faction wars to ship customization to the combat builds. No one system is done as well as their respective inspirations might have done 'em, but there's a lot to interface with and it's all done competently.

      • Very little out-of-the-animus stuff.

      • The writing and Kassandra's actress give it way more life. I've always found AC games boring and self-serious, but this time around I find myself actively looking for named-character sidequests to get at the dialogue. They hit a great balance of just the right campiness; it feels like they had fun writing it, and had fun doing the voice acting, rather than just "OK once more but more angry and tired".

Long story short, it just feels like so much less of a slog. Maybe this stuff was true for Origins as well. Honestly, I didn't play it since I felt the same way as you did towards AC.
