So hyped! C&C is one of my favorite franchises of all time, and it really has so much potential. I've been waiting literally years for this announcement, and I hope it finally gets the fandom back together. Man, with all these remakes and series revivals, looks like the early 2020's are shaping up to be an excellent era for retro! :)

Yeah, I think the Ages of Empires II Remaster's resounding success kind of proved how valid of a business model remastering 90's and early 00's games are. I mean, maybe they weren't first, but to my best recollection they are.

Since then, Blizzard released Starcraft Remastered and announced Warcraft III Reforged. Relic has released Homeworld Remastered, 343 Industries released the Master Chief Collection, and there's probably more in the works or that I'm not thinking of.

Interesting, but not entirely surprising, to note that a lot of the popular ones are RTS games. I'm not sure whether to attribute this to personal observational bias, to the fact that RTS games are probably vastly easier to remaster (limited assets of fairly low poly-counts in predictable situations) versus FPS, or simply their popularity and cultural significance makes them more likely to generate profits.

Either way, super hyped. I loved the hell out of Red Alert II but never played the original. Looking forward to trying it out in 4K. Hopefully they remaster the rest too, if this is successful.

It helps that RTS games are pretty stuck in the past and the classics haven't really been topped in the mind of your average player.

Despite being super keen on this (especially if it's success means a RA2 update) I can't help but still think of this as an attempt by EA to gain back its legitimacy as a games company in the eyes of the gaming public. After all, The Battlefront fiasco has its legacy embedded directly in this news release (we promise NO micro transactions!)

Slightly off-topic, but goddamn do I miss Westwood. The Legend of Kyrandia games are easily my favorite P&C adventure games of all time, even more than Monkey Island. Speaking of which, I also miss LucasArts, Bullfrog, Sierra, Origin Systems and many of the old PC game developers too. They just don't make them like they used to. :(

But hey, at least we have ScummVM, DosBox and GOG so we can keep playing those amazing classic games even on our modern systems.

I didn't really play much of it, but I loved the mobile faction, with giant walking buildings.

Grey Goo is on my wish list, but honestly with the plethora of RTS games and remasters out, not sure I'm ever gonna get around to it.

I haven't played either of those yet, but Grey Goo is on my Steam Wishlist. However, in truth I am not much of a RTS player anymore. I go back and play the classics at the occasional LAN party just for nostalgia's sake and will probably pick up this remastered C&C, but the last modern RTS I played was Starcraft 2. I'm more of a Grand/4X and turn-based strategy game player these days.

Stellaris is kind of hard to beat in the grand 4X category right now, but I really enjoyed Grey Goo. The different factions mechanics were super interesting, the story was pretty solid as far as RTS stories go (and the animation was phenomenal) and they had their original artist, Frank Klepacki, come up with the music. He's responsible for all of the Red Alert music that is loved.

If you encounter it on a sale and looking for a different experience, I'd recommend it.

And thanks for the recommendation about Grey Goo. I was aware of it and had it on my wishlist already but didn't really know much about it. The reviews seem pretty "mixed" but TBH the complaints seem mostly related to multiplayer issues, which I don't care about, and it being too hard and requiring too much micro/macro-management, which I think are actually positives not a negatives. And one of the negative reviews I read even compared it to KKND/KKND2, which were some of my favorite (and the weirdest) RTS' from the 90s. So knowing all that, if Grey Goo goes on sale, I will definitely have to pick it up.

Having fond memories of C&C, I have to realize that I happen to be in the target demographic of such a development. EA of course understands that as well since nostalgia help serves as a catalyst to compel many people to buy games that are continually being remade or remastered.

I can't help but notice that this is yet another title being brought out from gaming history's dusty shelves to be given the treatment of a new polish and a fresh coat of paint. This isn't so much a comment on EA specifically as it is a comment on the current state of the gaming industry - or more accurately, the state of "triple A" titles.

Loot boxes, microtransactions, and unnecessary different editions of the same game are all common complaints plaguing this area of videogames and I think rightfully so as these things and many more are what happens when an industry forgets what brought them there in the first place: fun. Sacrifice some fun for mechanics that encourage spending is an equation that seems to agree with companies like EA and "Activision Blizzard" and their shareholders and this behavior shows no sign of stopping if trends are any indication.

So while I am happy to see the news of a remaster of one of my favorite games, I can tell you that I will not preorder it, instead I will wait for reviews. I'm sure somebody knows someone who has been burned by any number of recently hyped titles that turned out to be not as good as what they might've thought (Fallout 76?). I encourage everyone to do the same. Friends don't let friends pre-order games.

The announcement specifically says (emphasis mine):

Well, C&C and Red Alert wouldn’t be the same without them, so all three expansion packs will be bundled with the base games into one remastered collection - without microtransactions.

Okay, in that case, my apologies. I obviously did not read the announcement properly.
