Not sure if there are many (any?) other MTG players around on Tildes yet, but this is interesting. A lot of this ban is based around how annoying it is to play against decks based on Nexus of Fate, which has been the subject of a lot of whining on /r/MagicArena especially. There have also been multiple instances of pro players streaming and ending up against opponents who sit there looping Nexus for literally hours, eventually requiring a WotC employee to step in and ban the opponent for abusing the system.

I'm interested to see if they end up keeping this in place, or if they improve the Arena interface/handling and eventually unban it once it's not quite so awful to play against.

I'm not a huge MTG fan anymore, but it's interesting that the ban is because of the failure of the platform to handle loops effectively. If there was a way to detect a loop and compress it down in some way that was intelligible to the players while moving it ahead faster than normal play hopefully it can be returned.

I always enjoy seeing the ways that physical games do and do not translate to online play, and this is a great (and rare) example of how a mediating computer makes the experience worse.

Arena's timers work in a way where you get a certain amount of "base time" for each turn. If you go past that time, there are some limited extra time chunks that you can use up if you need an occasional long turn, but your time gets mostly refreshed at the start of every turn.

There's no "total" time clock that ticks down through the whole game/match, so someone playing a deck that can take infinite turns can effectively continue forever, as long as they never take too long on any individual turn.

One of the things we talked about fairly early on was potentially allowing groups to have their own unique features. E.g. Allowing ~games‍.mtg to have a cardlinker built right in.

These group specific features could be developed by the group members themselves, since Tildes is opensource. But they could also potentially be used as a means of fundraising by allowing groups to hold donation drives aimed at having the features they really want implemented on the site developed. And when the donations from the drive reach enough to support the cost of the man-hours required to develop said feature it gets moved into the "high priority" development queue.

That being said, I want to get back into Modern since sets don't rotate and I could get myself one or two good decks and be set unless new cards or new bannings alter the decks.

I've been following Arena but I'm waiting for it to get to iOS. I used to play MtGO to feed my habit but found myself wanting something I could play on the go.
