I'm excited for this game, and will definitely buy it, but it doesn't seem like they're trying to look inside and reinvent what is a "Pokemon Aventure"—I had my fingers crossed for a "breath of the wild" style reinvention for this generation of Pokemon on the switch.

That said, I don't think my hopes are dead, we didn't see any gameplay, just short pre-rendered teasers. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for a series shake up (and not in the Lets Go sense).

One thing I do hope for, and am slightly sceptical about, is whether Game Freak will take some risks with the series, and move away from the generic 8 gym badges/elite 4 formula. I know they have developed a stronger narrative along side this in recent games, but the stories have always felt like an aside to this core concept.

You should give one of the Let's Go variants a try if you need to scratch the itch before Sword/Shield are released. They're pretty good.

Unfortunately it’s actually the best way to grind XP. Getting a catch combo and building it up is far more efficient for leveling than even gym battling is

That's my only real gripe with it as well. There's still plenty of battling in the game, though.

I'm not a Pokemon fan but I'm happy they're trying to move the series forward.
