I gotta say, this looks like a huge step up for the series graphically. I am also really happy to see it looks like a much more open environment to explore and look around in. Seeing a huge actual Pokemon arena to battle in is also really neat.

Here is the direct link to the full Pokemon Direct if anyone wants to check it out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOPVBm0sA7Q

I'm excited for this game, and will definitely buy it, but it doesn't seem like they're trying to look inside and reinvent what is a "Pokemon Aventure"—I had my fingers crossed for a "breath of the wild" style reinvention for this generation of Pokemon on the switch.

That said, I don't think my hopes are dead, we didn't see any gameplay, just short pre-rendered teasers. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for a series shake up (and not in the Lets Go sense).

I am massively excited for this, and will most likely get it on release day. One thing I do hope for, and am slightly sceptical about, is whether Game Freak will take some risks with the series, and move away from the generic 8 gym badges/elite 4 formula. I know they have developed a stronger narrative along side this in recent games, but the stories have always felt like an aside to this core concept.

You should give one of the Let's Go variants a try if you need to scratch the itch before Sword/Shield are released. They're pretty good.

My only concern with the Let's Go version is that you don't actually battle wild pokemon, you just throw balls at them like Pokemon Go. That seems like a less fun way of grinding xp to me.

Unfortunately it’s actually the best way to grind XP. Getting a catch combo and building it up is far more efficient for leveling than even gym battling is

That's my only real gripe with it as well. There's still plenty of battling in the game, though.

I'm not a Pokemon fan but I'm happy they're trying to move the series forward.
