02/28/2019: Nothing villainous to report on the dev log this week, as the bulk of my work time was spent preparing material for an upcoming Dwarf Fortress announcement.

    Well I am freaking out.

It's pretty odd for Toady to tease an announcement like this, and in the corresponding Reddit post, Meph, a long time developer of mods and tile sets for Dwarf Fortress, claimed to have some insider knowledge on the upcoming announcement. He went as far as to tease that it's related to IBM's quantum computing efforts, but I'm 99% sure that's just a joke.

Either way, I'm quite excited. I highly doubt it's anything worrisome, like the IP being bought, considering that when Tarn was making barely enough money through donations to stay above the poverty line he rejected six figure deals for the IP and he's making much more now. If I had to guess, I'd say they're bringing someone on as another developer, maybe to integrate some niceties into the game, which would make sense of why Meph knows about this.

So yeah, that's my guess, someone or multiple people, like Meph, PeridexisErrant, Quietust, or clinodev, who all make mod packs, scripts, and work on the memory hacking library DFHack, are probably getting picked up as a second programmer and will receive a share of the donations.

Which makes sense honestly. The donations have grown substantially in the past few years so Tarn and Zach could certainly afford a third developer/second programmer and integrating something like DFHack into the game itself would make it easier to approach.

About the only other person I could think of who would be picked up to work on the game would be mifki, who makes Dwarf Fortress Remote for iOS, letting you play the game on your phone or tablet by connecting to a server, and Text Will Be Text, a plugin for DFHack that makes multiple Z-levels viewable at the same time, among many other enhancements.

I actually really hope they're bringing on a third developer to work on making the game easier to access and use, because that's obviously the biggest hurdle to getting into Dwarf Fortress in the first place.

Or, it could just be some stuff related to the magic update, maybe some nice toys to play with before the Big Wait.

At least we have weeks to speculate and think about this.

Monthly donations are around $7k/month... splitting threeways, is that really enough to hire another developer at competitive rates? Consider me doubtful. If I had to hazard a guess, better...

If I had to hazard a guess, better integration for modders, possibly some sort of API so DFhack doesn't break every release. Either that, or we may finally get the complete legends mode CSV export. Who knows, really?

I don't recall what the current living situation is, what with Zach now being married, I'm sure they're not living as frugally as they used to, but I also think they could afford to cut some of the donation money to a third developer, but you're right, splitting it three ways seems unlikely.

If they do pick up a third person, they don't need to give them a third of the donations if they aren't working on it full time, which might be the case.

Also, the teased announcement could just be something more mundane, or it could be something thermonuclear, I really don't know, this is just my wildest but still relatively within the realm of possibilities style prediction.

I really like the idea of integrating DFHack more tightly into the game though. Anything that let's the community more easily make the game accessible and refined, I am a fan of.

Or, beta? Ruins the "decade in alpha" combo though. I love this game and the sheer dedication of it's maker.
