I wonder how Dota Underlords vs LoL Teamfight Tactics will compare to the original Dota 2 vs LoL battles. The two companies seem to keep making the same games and duking it out

So it's a pretty weird combination of multiple companies all trying to jump on this trendy variant of the MOBA-style games, with Valve rebuilding the mod officially as a separate game, Drodo turning their mod into a separate game but unable to use the official Dota characters, and Riot coming in from scratch with LoL characters.

This really does feel like shades of MOBA history. If history does indeed repeat itself, Underlords should fail to gain major traction, and Auto Chess and TT fight it out to be big games. Edit: I...

Edit: I should clarify this isn't what I am predicting will actually happen, this is just my best mapping of "Auto Chess" to my understanding of MOBA history

So let's get this straight, this was offered for free to Battle Pass holders less than a week ago and now it's open to everybody? Talk about killing an incentive to sell Battle Passes... Never...

Never tried auto chess but given all the hype surrounding it, I'm willing to give it a shot.

EDIT: After one game, I'm already disliking auto chess. I've never seen a game so luck and RNG dependent since playing FTL several years ago. It truly does feel like whoever manages to luck their way to enough 2 or 3 star heroes will win the match.

Of course there's a lot of RNG, but there are also myriads of hard decisions, in which a skilled player can get a huge edge.

Is it just me or is this looking kinda disappointing? I should say that I've never played Auto Chess or DOTA before, so I'm likely not even remotely the target audience, but the feature list looks pretty discouraging right now.

Maybe I'm just being overly cynical, but seeing things like "tournament support, ranked matchmaking" announced makes it look to me like an attempt to cash in on e-sports, and battlepasses and seasonal rotations (the latter of which I especially do not see any reason for besides artificial scarcity) don't help things at all.

It is at least free-to-play, so I'll probably give it a shot soon and may find myself proven wrong, but even so this looks like it'll probably just follow Artifact and lose players fast. Really sucks, to be honest; been waiting to see Valve release a quality game for some time, and this doesn't look like it'll live up to that hope at all.

I think it seems rushed, and that they're trying to hurry and get something available before Auto Chess and/or the LoL mode get established. I haven't played an actual game yet, but I installed the Android version and it definitely seems messy. I couldn't even get it to link with my Steam account successfully, and I gave up on it after that failed a couple times with no error or indication of what was going wrong. I'll try it again later.

I think a lot of the emphasis on ranked and so on is because of Artifact. When Artifact launched, it didn't have anything like that and a lot of the online complaining was people saying that they didn't have any reason to continue playing it because there was no rank progression or ability to earn cards by playing. There seem to be a lot of people who don't play games just because they enjoy them any more, but will only keep coming back if there's some way to make some numbers go up while they're doing it.

Yeah, I'd agree that's likely a huge part of it. I made a post about the leaked gameplay footage back on the 9th, and at the time I'd expected to wait somewhere around 4 months hear something about it, not the 4 days it ended up being.

I do remember Artifact having issues with progression-style things, but I'm not sure competitive features were what was specifically lacking? Seemed like it was more that there was no real progression at all. I've no doubt competitive features would help — just seems like an odd choice when a more focused progression system in general would assail the issue better, is all.

That said, my first gamedev project that saw any measure of success was literally an incremental game, so if there's one thing I get, it's to never underestimate the value of increasing arbitrary numbers, regardless of where they come from.
