Holy guacamole. The recent rumours were true. Very excited! Had a lot of fun with the beta. Can't wait to see what's been added in the last six(!) years.

Looks cool. I like the idea of procedurally generated content...but I'm still skeptical of its ability to craft a cohesive narrative and compelling world. Sometimes that's the fun...filling in the blanks with your own imagination. It's a tricky mechanic to utilize, I think.

This makes me think of one of my favorite games, Tail of the Sun. I bought it used at FuncoLand and it came in a generic sleeve with no manual and the Internet was not as readily available. Those factors made the game feel procedural, to me. I had no sense of purpose. But I enjoyed the exploration and the gradual understanding of game mechanics, as hazy as that understanding may have been. In fact, I still don't quite understand the goal of the game... This playthrough kind of mirrors my experience, as they come at the game with no prior understanding. It's damn hilarious and I really recommend it. Me and a friend watched the series together over some drinks and it was extremely entertaining.

    Anyway...what was I saying?

I'm definitely going to pick up a copy! I was keen to buy it when it came out way back in the day but the website was constantly down so we pirated it. I probably owe them a sale!

This is the first I've heard of this game, and so far ... ehhhhhh. I'm unsure. I've gotta make the obvious comparison in that it takes the Minecraft voxel artstyle and seems to focus on better combat this time. From a gameplay perspective, that seems okay, but after playing so many procgen survival games plus Subnautica, procedural generation sounds like a negative to me. After that, the combat – as it was shown in the Steam store page video anyway – looked decent, but I'm not sure it'll be able to hold up the game.

That all, and I honestly wish voxel art could be used less in these games. It feels like it's only being used because it's easy, and every time I see it the games end up looking to me like Minecraft with a texture pack and miscellaneous lighting improvements; nothing* ever stands out.

    * Blockscape did, but that's because it ditched voxels, so does it actually count?

Saying that Cube World has the Minecraft artstyle is like saying every pixel art game has the Mario artstyle.

Debatable, I'd say, but whatever; I'll just say voxels then. Either way, it's overdone, and so far I don't think Cube World or much of any other using them is doing enough to stand out visually....

I dunno if woolay has no interest, or if he's declined prior, but I'm really glad he's deciding to launch it on steam. It would suck to see the internet tear him (and his wife) a new one
