My anecdata says that the reason for this is there just less demand for new games these days. In the past you had game changing new technology that enabled huge improvements in graphics and the amount of stuff that can be done in games. For the last 5-10 years PCs have been good enough for almost any kind of gaming experiencing so there is now no reason to want the latest games since they aren't necessarily any more fun than the older games.

Looking at the games I have been playing recently: CS:GO, Civ V, Sims 3, Age Of Empires II. All of these games are at least 10 years old with AoE hitting 20 years old and are still super fun to play today. PC also doesn't have the forced obsolesion like console games have when a new console comes out that can't play the older games so the lifespan of a game on PC is way higher.

Another thing that makes old games more desirable is when playing multiplayer its more likely that more of your friends own the older games. Civ 6 is out but all of my friends own 5 so thats what we play.

I wonder that now with technological progression out of the way if we will see video games reach a state like traditional games where a great game lasts generations like chess or go. VR is the only disruption I see in this space but I wonder if vr will even be suitable for most game types.

It might be that my perspectives have changed over the years but, l have noticed there's a lot less fun games coming out lately, or at least not stuff l like such as games like Bioshock or Portal or Dishonored or the lot. I've mostly played older games a lot over the past few years.
l guess devs target other crowds nowadays.

I agree. There are very few recent games that I see people remembering for very long into the future. Games feel much more disposable now for some reason, just jumping from fad to fad and trend to...

Yeah, this might be where Indie Games has their "Yesterday's Classics and Today's Hits" moment, where we have enough indie games in the canon to be nostalgic for the classics without realizing that a lot of the games of that time were crap too.

He didn't ignore that at all, he specifically eliminated them. Out of the ~900 games in the initial dataset, he removed all games with less than 10 reviews (which was about 700 of them and would have covered that kind of shovelware) and then also removed the bottom 5% by revenue out of the ones remaining to catch any other low-revenue outliers.

The analysis only included 170 games out of about 900 candidates, the methodology is explained on the third page/slide.

Most games that get released at a low price point are very low effort games

The games will still be trash.

Yeah that's the thing, there's a low point of quality. If there's some kind of gem of an idea within the game, players can wait a few patches till the quality improves. But if it's just shovelware as you say, well the reviews will be bad anyway, might as well make a few extra bucks right? :'(
