At 75, my mother decided to play through "Red Dead Redemption 2" and I am so pleased to share her essay about the experience with all of you. Please enjoy: "Unsung heroes: Reconceptualizing a video game as a work of art." by Jessica Hoffmann Davis, EdD **SPOILER ALERT**
It has finally come to this. As many of you know - my Mom embarked on an unlikely mission to play Rockstar Games’ “Red Dead Redemption 2” from start to finish. Many (myself included) had doubts as to whether she would have the true grit needed to see it through. Well, 6 Chapters and 2 Epilogues later and I am so happy to report she has made her way to the end of the story.
But that is not the end of the story.
What many of you may not know is that my Mom is a long time champion of the arts in education and taught and wrote on the subject for many years - and she has written an extraordinary essay about her experience playing the game.
The support from all of you on my Instagram feed has meant the world to her as she has been on her journey - and it has meant the world to me as well.
I am overwhelmed that Mom made this tremendous effort and her reflections on the experience speak to the power storytelling has to connect people of all ages, experiences and walks of life.
I have posted it for your pleasure on the RDR reddit (link in bio) and cannot wait to hear what you think of it. From the bottom of my heart - thanks so much for sharing this journey with my mom. It has been a remarkable experience.
Benjamin Byron Davis, the actor for Dutch, made a post about this on Instagram as well, text copied here:
