I think that's the "in a nutshell" version, and I don't think I spoiled anything.

It's one of the problems that comes with an extensive modding scene. Unless they change things up in a really significant way that mods couldn't do, what are they doing that mods haven't already done? At least they aren't going the Bethesda Fallout 4 route of just trying to monetize their modding community, but past a certain point of mechanics rebalancing I think of the dev team as a professional and approved mod team.

Minecraft is definitely into that realm, which I think is part of why they rebalanced combat again. This was something no one else could/would do, and so it made their changes more significant.

I don't know. Not updating the base game with useful quality content just because a mod already did it feels like it leaves the base game suffering due to an unnecessary concern for novelty. Mod content doesn't hold itself to the same standards as the main game does, and a lot of people just don't install mods, even if it's really easy. Even amongst those that do, any given mod is only going to see a small portion of them unless it's hugely popular.

I would understand the concern if the developers were worried they'd appear as if they were "ripping off" a particular mod, but if that's the case, why not work with the original mod author to add it to the game? As an added benefit, you'd likely have less of a wheel to reinvent.
