The entire plot of The Last of Us 2 and one major cutscene has been leaked
A major cutscene also got leaked. This is a link to that cutscene. Proceed at your own risk.
It seems that QA testers were promised bonuses when the game was going to launch, but with the indefinite delays, those bonuses obviously got pushed back. Considering that the menu language of the cutscene is Portuguese (I think), I wouldn't be surprised if someone from South America, where QA probably got outsourced to (Naughty Dog is infamous for their bad work culture) was depending on that bonus, especially with the covid situation.
I don't know how to handle this situation discussion-wise right now. If you want to spoil yourself for whatever reason (maybe not planning on buying the game, whatever) and discuss the plot of TLOU2, please mark everything as spoilers (you can use sections to hide sensitive info). Everyone else, tread lightly.
EDIT: Actually, a lot more cutscene got leaked, here's the links in the section:
Naughty Dog made a statement about this today (written out in full below, clicking through to the tweet may be dangerous since I'm sure people will be replying with spoilers):
The release date was also updated again today, and is now June 19.
I wonder if this was done in response, or if that date was planned for a longer time.
The game is pretty much ready, I'm just guessing they made it June 19 since they must have figured out their logistical issues
I’m personally glad this got leaked. I was going to buy it, but now I’m not. I disagree with a lot of the direction the devs chose, but that’s not really why I won’t buy it. It would make me feel bad. I think I’d be sick to my stomach having to play through certain parts of this game. I don’t need that right now or maybe ever really. I can’t imagine why Naughty Dog thought it would be a good idea.
I agree with you. A lot of the game just feels like misery porn to me and ND completely overdid it. There are ways to achieve a sense of bleakness without having to resort to such immense shock values (see games like Pathologic 2).
GamesIndustry.biz updated their article about the leaks today, saying that Sony told them that they've identified the source of the leaks:
Spoiler: Plot related discussion in this section. Everything is discussed.
The second half is what I don't understand though. While Joel's death was expected, the fact that the narrative changes in the second half to Abby is what I absolutely do not understand. The player has gone through a lot of hurt with Ellie, and a lot of people care about the character. Making her the antagonist will be difficult sell.
The way I see it, everything hinges on humanizing Abby. If the writers manage to sufficiently show her plight to the audience, people might flip on her. But I see 2 problems with that:
I could see this problem ending up like the character of Skyler in Breaking Bad. The writer meant her to be a moral hinge for the audience, to see how Walter was slipping into becoming evil, but instead the audience mostly perceived Skyler as an obstacle to Walter, because he was the protaganist and she wasn't, and thus were mostly annoyed by her.
I see this going the same way, because Abby isn't the protagonist, Joel and Ellie are. And they already have one entire (fantastic) game of goodwill built up. Abby is going to get half a game, and that as an NPC. And then suddenly she becomes the playable character and you have to hunt down Ellie who escapes, something I imagine a lot of players are going to have a huge problem with. And then you kill her in the end. Something a lot more players are going to have a really huge problem with.
I think this would've worked better if Abby was the player character from the beginning in TLOU2 and got the entire game devoted to her with a plot unrelated to Joel and Ellie, with the clash between the Joel, Ellie and Abby coming in the TLOU3. This way more players could've maybe empathized with her. Right now a lot of people are saying that because of that ending they won't buy the game and I can understand them because that second half just seems so bizarre.
Got nothing to do with reddit. Remember the launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?
People just love to ruin shit for others.
