I just know that The Last of Us really hooked me from the get-go and there's no way I'm going to miss the chance to continue that story.
The thing about spoilers is, if the story is truly great, you can enjoy it even with spoilers. Just like you can watch a good movie many times. All you lose is a gasping moment for some surprise...

Something happens to the two main protagonists which will render them irrelevant from The Last of Us series going forward.

I mean, I'm sorry, but I just don't buy that. All videogame plots are bad. Literally, all of them. Even the good ones. We shrug and move on. Whenever there's an "outcry", lately, it's alt-right complaints. "It's just the weaknesses of the plot" rings like "it's about ethics in game journalism".
Btw, I'm not replying to you, personally, it's more of a summary of how I see it framed on the internet. I'm sure the plot also has its weaknesses.

The top comment in the r/gamingthread directly deals with the plot and not the fact that the game maybe features another minority, as nothing has been confirmed at all. Like, you know, body types exist.

This isn't a new tactic, we've seen it since GamerGate first reared its head in 2015. They'll glom onto specifically a pithy or vague comment that multiple perspectives can get behind, and then by volume spam their more off-colour rationale. It's a variation of the format @Loire talked about elsewhere where it starts small and snowballs.

KiA is not exactly an unbiased resource of opinion though, and there's a valid argument from what has been revealed that the game might lose investment by being too dismal. If you want to make an argument that the cloud of fury is around the character, I'd agree, but I could see a lot of people skipping on this game if the story event leaks "yuck their yum," regardless of quality.
I think we're trying to make tangential points here; the gamer-sphere is going to go after the LGBT character because it's red meat to that crowd, and the consensus on the game is probably going...
I think we're trying to make tangential points here; the gamer-sphere is going to go after the LGBT character because it's red meat to that crowd, and the consensus on the game is probably going to go to a very dark place for most people, and that might impact their enjoyment. This feels like it's going to be another Last Jedi in the future where whatever genuine criticism is swallowed up by internet bile, complicated by the fact that the game isn't out yet.
I'm just going to put a warning up top here that what I write below isn't meant to be ironclad, I'm just throwing in my two-cents while taking a break from work. If anything is contentious or...

The only thing I can add to the other replies is that right before GamerGate and all started, gamers were largely placed on the defensive from social justice issues. I think some people may remember the whole "SRS" chapter of reddit's history, where that group of people decided laughing at reddit's misguided ideas or misconceptions of social issues was the way to go. It wasn't just SRS, there was a whole subculture of it that stemmed from other groups (thus "Tumbler in Action").
Games, largely, weren't regarded in the mainstream but started to be around this time period, and because games have always had a... limited perspective, they were ripe targets for a lot of very legitimate concerns and complaints. But those weren't always delivered well. I recall most social issue articles and news stories I read about games pre-GamerGate were pointed or accusatory in tone, and not at all educational to gamers about what the actual problem was, only that the results were somehow bad.
So of course they were defensive. It made them ripe for the anti-SJW types to co-opt them into the cause. We've seen similar things happen in smaller scales in recent years, usually when a prominent celebrity crosses the loud leftist types on Twitter. I remember when Killer Mike had that period where he was defending guns vociferously, there were a lot of Twitter replies prodding him with variations of "Wow, so much for the tolerant left huh? I guess leftists aren't where it's at!", which Killer Mike in his momentary frustration agreed with even though he, politically, is almost radically left. Luckily Killer Mike is a smart man and stopped that quickly, but similar things happened with various others. I remember it happened with Terry Crews too.
I count myself lucky because around that time period, I met a lot of people and friends who weren't internet-types and so would more calmly and rationally discuss social matters and issues. For example, I was exposed to the idea of "cultural appropriation" as a neutral term very early whereas on the internet it was only every a hostile accusation so it took on a different meaning entirely.
Right. I remember reading that and having my brain melt. It still weirds me out how well that worked, though. Like, there's some deep, psychological mind-fuckery going on. My theory is that it's...

My theory is that it's basically nerds having been rejected by girls in high school and now getting offended by them "invading their escapism". So it's literally getting mad at women for getting into videogames now because they weren't before. Or something. How that's spun into homophobia is a more convoluted issue but it's probably women->feminism->liberalism. Gamergate sure was a gateway drug.

As far as I've seen, it's not even confirmed that that person is trans? It's becoming rather predictable, sigh. How on earth did the right manage to infiltrate "gamer" culture so badly?
The majority if complaints I've seen was leveraged against the plot, not the supposed sexual identity of characters.

I mean if that's your opinion, there's really no discussion to be had here.
There's no discussion to be had about the quality of videogame plots in relation to quite literally any other medium out there?
No, as in, if your opinion is as absolute as literally all video game plots are bad then there's no discussion to be had.
