This was posted directly to /r/Doom by Id Software Executive Producer Marty Stratton.

    Key points:

    • Denuvo Anti-Cheat is being removed with the next patch.
    • Any future implementation of anti-cheat technology will not be required when playing single player.
    • The stability issues in Update 1 were not the result of Denuvo, but regressions in the game itself.
    • The decision to use Denuvo Anti-Cheat was made internally by the development team at Id and not foisted on them by Bethesda.

    /r/Games thread.

Nice to know I'll be able to play on linux again - I wonder what this cost id though, I'm assuming they still had to pay Denuvo some amount of money despite not using it.

I think Denuvo Anti-Cheat will eventually return when it's more polished and they've worked out a clean way to make it optional outside of matchmaking. Additionally, Denuvo has stated they are working on options to make their Anti-Cheat product work in Proton/WINE like they currently do with their Anti-Tamper product.

Ah, that works just as well for me - I'm not necessarily for kernel-level anticheat, but I recognize its a valid usecase (kernel-level or otherwise - in a perfect world no-one would cheat in online games, but they can and do, hence the need for anticheat). Good to know Denuvo's open to supporting Wine/Proton as well, perhaps their anticheat working would pave the way for others being ported.
