Let's do a deep dive into the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality together!

The Bundle

itch.io's Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality is a collection of indie media content offered up as a fundraiser for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Community Bail Fund. The minimum purchase is $5 which gains you access to 1637 items from 1304 different creators. The bundle has raised over $5 million dollars so far and is a genuinely incredible show of support and solidarity from the gaming community for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Here is the previous Tildes topic about it, here is a subreddit for it, and here is a community spreadsheet cataloging its contents.

The Content

The bundle is primarily video games, but it also has tabletop games, game assets, books, music, and tools. It is an intimidatingly large amount of content, and much attention has been called to some of the collection's highlights and standout titles: 1 2 3 4 (if you find other lists, let me know and I'll link them here).

I'm thinking it would be neat for us on Tildes to explore and highlight some of its less well-known content. The people who have made their creations available in this bundle have done so generously and in support of a great cause, so this is a way that we can show some appreciation for them by bringing some attention to their work. It is also possible to re-purchase games that you already own on itch.io and add tips to that purchase, so you can also monetarily support any devs you choose should you feel inclined to do so.

The Event

Using whatever selection methods or criteria you like, dive into an item/multiple items from the bundle and then report back here about it. There is a handy website that lets you filter the whole set of items, and it also has a very useful "pick a game" button that selects a game at random from the batch.

However you choose something, let us know what you've chosen, what it was, what your experience was like with it, and whether or not you recommend it. Format your entries however you like but please Bold the Titles of Items so people can scan the thread more easily!

Feel free to submit multiple entries to the topic as you explore the bundle. I'm thinking that with a few of us doing this over a couple of days, we can cover a lot of ground and surface some interesting and easily overlooked content.

Our Selections

I'll keep a table of the highly recommended things we surface here. To select something to be included here, mention in your writeup that it qualifies for "Tildes' Choice" status, and I'll add it to the list!

Pico 8 is there: It's a "fantasy console," that is designed as an 8-bit game console. You create your own sounds with a simple tracker, graphics with a minimal sprite editor, and program in a built-in text editor to develop games. Or, you can download everybody else's games and play them, modify them, and not have to do a darn thing but play. They're more or less "microgames," but there's plenty of good stuff if you just want to consume.

Lenna's Inception, but @cfabbro got that comment from me.

Micro Mages: It's actually an NES game. It was developed as an NES ROM, and the only way I found to install it via the itch platform was to get the rom and run it in an emulator (I use RetroArch with FCEUMM). If you've got an everdrive, it should work on hardware. It has a vertical scroll like Ice Climbers, and supports up to 4 players (I think NES has a multi-tap, but you can also network with many emulators).

Some well known ones are obviously Celeste (which I plan to play) and Octodad (also plan to play it), but these are some ones I found that people may get a kick out of.

This is dizzying! It's at 1,637 items now. It's also definitely not just shovelware (although on itch.io, even the "shovelware" tends to have heart). This might finally force me to do a deep dive into itch.io weirdness, which should be rather rewarding. I haven't had a chance to dive into it too deeply, so here's a few games that I either already own or which already were on my radar (I'll leave out obvious picks like Celeste, A Short Hike or Night in the Woods):

Glittermitten Grove: It's weird that this is a spoiler but,

    Spoiler!It's Frog Fractions 2, right?

Dominique Pamplemousse: Weird, quirky indie point-and-click adventures is a rather saturated field now, but this is one of the originals and somewhat pure.

Quadrilateral Cowboy: Maybe the best known game from Blendo Games, square shaped heads, hacking, general weirdness.

Old Man's Journey: Simple, charming puzzle game with beautiful art style. I got this for rather cheap on the Switch. It works great with a touch screen, it's basically a model for "how to do actually good mobile games".

Secrets of Rætikon: Same studio as Old Man's Journey, I rather like them. You fly around, explore secrets, enjoy the rather cool 2D-polygon environments.

Hidden Folks: Black and white version of Where's Waldo, it's quite lovely in its simplicity.

Pikuniku: Surreal physics-y platformer. I know there's a ton of those, nowadays, but this is one of the cuter/more interesting ones.

Starseed Pilgrim: A bunch of squares growing like plants, shifting from being space to solid and other weird rules that make the play field constantly change. It's hard to explain but kinda brilliant.

Heavy Bullets: I think I remember this one from some year's Experimental Gameplay Workshop, which is usually a quality guarantee (and often a potential hit predictor). It's a first person shooter but the gag is that each bullet really counts, like you have to plan ahead and be really careful? I haven't had a chance to play it but expect it to be in the excellent tradition of games like Super Hot or Devil Daggers, gotta check it out!

Parallax: Some Portal-esque 3D puzzler with some interesting twists.

Windosill: A super early indie point-and-click-y thing I remember rather fondly.

Receiver: An FPS game with an absurdly detailed gun-model, kind of a commentary how modern games tend to get guns wrong.

Lieve Oma: I'll be honest, for a lot of games it's the art style that gets me, it just look super cute.

Dorfromantik: Looks like a great, chill citybuilder/board-game-ish type thing that I wanted to check out for a while, now.

aaaand that's like... page 26 of 55 of clicking through the list. Again, dizzying. I like how on itch.io, you can just download a zip and whatnot, without needing to install a whole launcher app thingy, I downloaded many of the above and maybe try and have an indie weekend. Maybe it's worth just downloading a few of the weirder games blindly. I'm also into the new trend of low-res 3D indie games kinda channelling PS1 era graphics, it's still mostly a bit clumsy but it has potential. Might check out a few games just looking for that.

I honestly don't know where to start, lol.

From Itch's social justice bundle, i figured I'd check out Lenna's Inception. The best way I can describe it is a hilarious woke parody of The Legend of Zelda, around the time of Ages/Seasons, and maybe a handheld game in either direction. You're Lenna, and you're trying to prevent the game world from being corrupted. The characters don't actually acknowledge or know they're in a game, just that stuff's getting corrupted. It's so good, too, though, because it plays exactly how I feel one should expect this sort of game to play. As a parody it's really great because it also has a lot of rather original stuff from the mechanics to the story development, at least after two temples.

I haven't gone through the full list, especially since that list seems to keep growing. But I loved Fortune 499 when I got it through Humble Monthly. It was a really unique take. I didn't think you could make rock-paper-scissors interesting.

I've also seen a good number of art assets, I periodically do stuff like run TTRPG games, and having a collection of art assets in my back pocket can be a huge help. They're also really helpful if you're at all interested in game development, especially during the prototype phases.

This is a great bundle for a great cause, I would encourage as many of you as possible to give more than the minimum. If you have the means, of course.

That being said, I have been looking forward to playing Anodyne since I've already heard good things about it (as well as its sequel).

I'm actually looking forward to the "other" content in this bundle. There's amusing titles that allude to Japanese light novels like My Friends And I Were Granted Three Wishes By A Cat Goddess And I Swear I Got Distracted When My Turn Came Around which seems like it would be a fun short read. And as an avid reader of Hardcore Gaming 101, I would recommend everyone to read HG101 Presents: The Guide to Classic Graphic Adventures.

I'm also interested in some of the tabletop games, though I don't see a realistic way to play any of them both because of lack of time and interested parties.

I also both love and hate the concept of Electric Zine Maker.

My strategy: I will be picking games purely at random using the tool here. I'm focused specifically on the videogames and not anything else in the bundle, and most of the time I'm doing this I'll be on my Linux machine, so I'm mostly limited to games that will run on it (though I might try some out on my Windows box too). I'll post updates under this comment as I complete more batches.

The game gets automatic points for me for being made in Godot and having a Linux build that worked flawlessly. The game is a difficult platformer with hand-drawn chalk aesthetic. It reminded me of old web-based Flash games I used to play and in many ways seems to be deliberately going for that kind of thing. What it lacks in polish it makes up for with DIY flair and feel. Core gameplay is good; precision on jumps is a little tricky. My only complaint is that I got to a level I'm legitimately not sure how to beat, which is where I stopped. All told, not a bad experience.

This game's Linux build didn't work, so I tried installing the web version, which also didn't work, so I ended up just playing the game directly on the storepage. It's an endless runner game where you're a superhero that saves people from rooftops for money. The art style and design for the game are absolutely fantastic and comic-booky, and they elevate the game and give it an appearance of polish that far exceeds what I expect from a Ludum Dare title. I would have played more of it but the web version had a very distinct jittering in its scrolling that only got worse as the game sped up and would have given me a headache or motion sickness had I continued. I'm assuming this is probably due to the web version (it even warns you about performance issues in the beginning) and would likely be alleviated if I'd been able to launch the native version instead.

This is hard to describe accurately without giving anything away, but basically it's a light horror visual novel about a monster that ensnares someone and a witch who has to deal with the monster. The game is interesting, has a good sense of humor, a satisfying plot arc, and great artwork to boot. Points for running in Linux (as always), as well as some other aspects that I can't praise without spoiling it. All told, I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's a great indie VN with heart.

This is a local multiplayer game that I genuinely think could be fun with friends in a chaotic, messy sort of way. The premise is that it's a bit like an air-hockey game, only you control a figure that has two circular "scoops" on either side. The scoops are enough to cradle the puck but not fully push it, so to maneuver it around the level you have to sort of swoop your figure in circles while keeping the puck cradled. You can then swiftly turn to fire a shot. It's tricky to get right, and over the course of playing through and beating the 8 single-player stages, I definitely could feel my skill in maneuvering in the game improving. I only did the single player and didn't try it with friends, but I could see it being enjoyable.

Turns out I already owned this on itch.io. Purchased 4 years ago, according to my library. Who knew?! One of the things I hope this bundle encourages me to do is not neglect itch.io as I have in the past. I've never given it it's due even though it's pretty much everything I want -- a way to support small creators directly and an open source client to boot! Anyway, Trawl is an interesting experimental "game" with great sound and atmosphere. It has a bit of a horror vibe. You're alone on a dark ocean in a small boat. It's raining. You can steer the ship and raise and lower a net in order to get items. You can, at any point in the game, sit down at a typewriter below deck and write anything you want on the game's in-game typewriter, with the items you trawl from the ocean being potential inspiration for a story or your thoughts. After writing, you can put your notes in a bottle and throw it into the ocean, at which point the game ends. The game saves drafts of what you write to your computer, so it very much seems less like a game and more like an elaborate setup to get into a good writing headspace. I was thinking that part of the game would be trawling up other people's bottles and reading their writing, but I looked up reviews of the game following my play through of it and that's not the case. I actually think that kind of thing would be absolutely incredible, and I would love to spend time in a game like that -- a sort of more creative version of Kind Words.

This is a prototype for a full-release that is coming in 2021. It looks to be a sort of Settlers of Catan-inspired single-player puzzle game about laying down hexes with different resources to meet different goals. I liked the look of it and the idea, but I didn't really know what I was doing in the game, and my tiles kept changing. It wasn't clear if the changing tiles were intended or a bug (likely a bug), so I finished my playthrough by running out of tiles and stopped playing. I think they have the potential for a cool game here, so it's something that is probably worth looking into when they fully release.

This is a minimalist pure puzzle game where you have to draw lines through numbers that can only equal or ascend in value. Aesthetically it's very clean and well-designed. After playing it a bit on PC, I went ahead and bought the mobile version, as it's actually better with a touchscreen. Easily worth playing in this bundle if you like these kinds of games, and I was happy to pay the $1.99 to buy it on mobile and support the dev.

This is an FPS roguelike with a strange alien aesthetic and worlds. The setting reminds me a bit of Xen from the original Half-Life, albeit more colorful. You kill enemies to gather currency which you can spend at trees for powerups. I think the concept for the game is good, but the balance might be a bit off. I kept getting killed very quickly by a certain enemy type. Granted, I'm also pretty bad at games in general, so this might be a much better game for someone who's more skilled than I am.

This game is still in development and is pretty promising. It's an homage to Starfox and delivers on that, though its environments are more minimalistic and less colorful (but its framerate is way better!). At present it's playable, but I did notice that it's hard to land shots, as well as hard to tell if your shots are landing (which feeds into the first problem). It's something that I definitely think has promise but probably needs a little bit more time to cook.
