Becoming a free-to-play game was fairly unexpected, especially since it's been so successful. I haven't played it much for years now, but my impression is that they had been adding more and more free-to-play monetization anyway (lootboxes, battle passes, etc.), so I guess it just makes sense to go all the way with it.

If this was in the cards, it kinda makes sense that Linux and Mac support was dropped. I have to assume that most people mad about that, the Steam delisting, and the Epic Sale already got it out...

Without a controller it would kind of suck though. One thumb would steer, the other would be responsible for accelerating, boosting, jumping, drifting/rolling...I don't know it doesn't sound like...

Great! Matchmaking will be lively! Shame I just bought it a few weeks ago for PC after playing it on Ps Plus off and on.

At first I was kinda angry, even though I didn't play it that much. Then I figured that I will now be able to play it in the evenings on my Switch, while laying in bed

I'm not planning on deleting it from my Steam account, did this article say those versions would be deactivated?

I've been seeing more and more videos from RL content creators lamenting the current state of affairs in the game, Lethamyr being the largest person that's had something to say so far. I'd like for the developers to get together and have some sort of community outreach going on to address the concerns, but I doubt Epic Games would really feel the need to do so. I still love RL, and plan to play it for a while more but "I weep for those who it hath forsook."

Oh, no, existing versions will continue to work (and play cross-platform with all other versions, including the Epic Store one):

Once Rocket League goes free to play, anyone who already owns Rocket League on any platform (including Steam) will be able to play and enjoy the game with full support for future updates and features. However, the Steam version will no longer be available to download for new players. To put it simply, wherever you play now (including Steam), you'll still be able to play in the future.
