While I am probably too old for Roblox, I am aware of a relevant case.

Imgur was created as an image storage for Reddit, and then became a dual-use site (image storage as well as image board with comments and voting). At some point, they decided to… ban nudity, which resulted in, would you believe?, an endless whack-a-mole game between NSFW image uploaders and Imgur admins.

Finally, they recognised the inevitable and added the NSFW flag with the corresponding requirements (including the annoying requirement to be logged in when even viewing NSFW content).

Maybe Roblox should follow the same way: allow those dreaded Condo games provided that they are properly flagged and that only adult users can play them.

(feel free to flag as Off Topic).

It's a online game engine that allows for direct programming where seasoned programmers can develop games and children can script kiddie enough to understand and make there own in a collective universe.

It's not the greatest thing on the planet, but as an online platform it is phenomenal in what you can create and take advantage of with some great privacy measures built in.

tl;dr: It's just a game you can program yourself that ties into every other game in the Roblox universe.

To elaborate the younger players (6-9yo) I know mostly play it for the exploration and fun. Maybe build something or just run around doing silly stuff. Like Goat Simulator without the creating. That's why it can be difficult to understand for outsiders because in a lot of cases the point of the game is just running around and experiencing different digital playgrounds.

Yeah, like others have said, it's kind of a game creation platform. My nephew who's about 10 is playing it all the time, and the rules of the games always seem pretty different (but they look mostly the same). I've seen him playing co-op "defend the base from monsters" ones, team PVP games, ones that don't seem to have any fighting at all, ones where everyone just wants to trade items or something, etc.

I don't know much about how the whole thing works either, but like it talks about in the article, it seems like people can just launch servers that use whatever rules/map/etc. that they've set up and other players can join. I think Second Life is a reasonable comparison, but it definitely had a lot more freedom with the appearance of everything, and I think everything was mostly linked together into one big world instead of split into individual servers like this.

It's not really a game, really. It's more like what gmod was. It's a platform that over people make games on.

You mean Garry's Mod? Haven't played it, but heard about it. So far this sounds like Second Life to me. Am I very far from it?

Calling it Second Life is kinda dumbing it down I feel. It's a pretty open ended platform, and people can import their own models, maps, sounds, etc. and make entire games with Roblox as the foundation. There's even a Call of Duty ripoff in roblox as well haha. There are servers that function more like Second Life, with roleplaying and the like, but there's a lot of other servers on it that are just poor imitations of preexisting games. It's pretty prone to the latter as it's free to play

I think you might have a mistaken impression of Second Life; It isn't just for role playing. You can do pretty much everything that you mentioned being able to do in Roblox in SL too. SL has in-game 3D modeling, asset importing (models, sounds, etc), user scripting, and even custom servers (Islands) which host various user created games. See: https://secondlife.com/destinations/games

Source: Am former Second Life player who used to create custom in-game 3D models (houses, furniture, etc) for people for $. ;)

l think the difference is that SL primarily focuses socializing whereas Roblox is game-oriented.

Ahh okay, I'd feared that my impression of it was incorrect. Everything I know about it is only ever stuff I've heard, and it sounded kinda like VRchat then haha. Thanks for the correction!
