A friend of mine's small-startup-size company just got bought by nVidia and among the box of branded crap they got sent as a welcome gift were RTX3080s for all the staff. Most whom aren't gamers and sold them on for a nice cash bonus, but my friend was happier about the card than the large bump in his bank account that accompanied the buyout. He gave me his old GPU so I'm pretty chuffed too. I won't be raytracing Cyberpunk anytime soon, but I will be able to play it on fairly decent settings.

The 3060 Ti is launching on the 2nd (tomorrow as of this post) for $399, probably at 9 AM EST for US-based online stores like Newegg.

I don't buy all this 2022 doom and gloom. I bet cards will be pretty readily available within a month or two after Christmas.

A 2060 (1070 equivalent) is recommended for 1440p. You might be able to find a used one of those at a solid price given people are upgrading.

I'm going to wait another year or two before buying a new gpu and a Valve Index. It's a seller's market right now, so I'll hold tight and play through my backlog of games from the last 5 years.

They really should switch to a proper bid/ask market or an auction for these things rather than just setting a price and, predictably, immediately running out. If the first 3080 off the line really is worth like $4000, nVidia should pocket that and spend it making more 3080s, rather than letting professional scalpers swoop in and annoy all their customers.

Presumably they're at max production capacity already, since the RRP is profitable and it'd be in their interests to fill more orders if they could, so I don't think selling the first batch for $4000 would make and meaningful difference to availability.

My worry would be the exact opposite: scarcity, whether real or artificial, would push up the auction price. If they're pocketing the difference, it becomes in their interest to limit supply over time to make more profit from less manufacturing.

Scalping pays a middle man at the expense of the consumer. Auctions pay the manufacturers at the expense of the consumer. The pro-consumer move here would be a lottery system with winners allowed to purchase at RRP.

Is "RRP" recommended retail price? Assuming it is, when did that replace the much more familiar (to me anyway) "MSRP"?

Yeah, recommended retail price. I didn't even think about it, it's always been RRP in my mind, although I've definitely read MSRP before as well - most likely a UK/US difference, I imagine.

So it looks like people who bought the game for the last-gen consoles are really struggling with the game right now. 15-20 FPS, super blurry textures, unreadable signs etc while the people who are playing on high-end PCs are having less issues.

So I have to hand it to CDPR, a game release that is only enjoyable for people with expensive gaming rigs or the lucky ones who managed to get hold of a new console is pretty fucking cyberpunk after all. ;)

But in all seriousness the variance in opinions and experiences coming from players of this game is huge. I think we won't know the community's true feelings on the game until after the bugs are fixed, emotions cool and the hype fades -- which in my opinion will be quite some time.

Which processor queue did you get in? Will they hold one to give you a chance to purchase it? I am so ready to get off this train. I signed up for the EVGA notifier just now.

This hasn't really changed, you still get the latest and greatest 1080p card for US$400 that will max out all the games and run everything at a minimum of 60fps. It's just that the "high-end" has move to chasing bigger resolutions, like 1440p, ultrawide, and 4K now.

I'm expecting to spend around twice the price of my original build, once I factor in a high refresh rate 1440p monitor, but what I want from my next computer is a lot more too. Going from 60fps 1080p to 120-144fps 1440p is a big step up.

and get a 1080 which can do raytracing. I have one and can play every game smoothly. Even a 1070 is pretty awesome which I have in my laptop.

Then by next fall the next big thing will be out and you can afford what is new this year. Plus all bugs get worked out. I am sure that a 1080 will work just fine. Cyberpunk 2077 has a license agreement with Nvidia, so of course they are going to tell us to get the latest and greatest video card. But that card didn't even exist when they made this game, so the 1080 is going to be fine.

The 10x0 series does not have any hardware ray-tracing accelerators. Though that card will play the game just fine if you are OK with playing the game without RT features.

It may not have RT accelerators but it still plays with RT. I have heard that it gets 60 fps so I am fine with that.

It won't work for Cyberpunk. The GTX 1080 was capable of keeping up with the first few games that supported basic raytracing slapped on (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Battlefield 5) but now that there are games with more intensive uses, it will not achieve a playable framerate i.e. Control, and Minecraft.

Cyberpunk is running heavily on even the 3000 series cards (which, raytracing aside, are significantly more powerful than the GTX 1080 in terms of raw power) and RTX is not advised without DLSS 2.0 also enabled, which the 10 series doesn't support.

I'm happy with my current GTX 1070 for a while more and will probably wait another GPU generation or two before I upgrade, or even play CP2077, but I wouldn't suggest anyone goes out and buys a GTX 1080 right now. All GPUs are currently overpriced due to the demand, and a card two generations old is going to start showing its age very soon now that the new consoles are out and games will be made to take advantage of more power within two years.

Sorry I was confused and thought we were talking about a 2070. I agree with you that you can't run it on a 1070. I wouldn't even expect a 1080 to run it.
