    If you're new to Factorio, I can't recommend KatherineOfSky's YouTube videos highly enough. In particular her 69 part (so far) Entry level to megabase 3 tutorial series. As the name suggests, that's the 3rd time she's done that series, the previous two were using older versions of the game. The third one is based on the 1.0 release and stands alone, you don't need to watch the first two.

    She is worth supporting on Patreon if you can afford it - she lives with chronic illness (24/7 migraines and neuropathy) and the ridiculous social safety net here in the US denied her disability benefits, so YouTube videos are her "job" and primary source of income.

    I haven't played Factorio myself in quite a while, and don't have any screenshots of my old builds. But a YouTuber by the name of Francis John recently did a really fun megabase series on Factorio, that was part Let's Play and part Tutorial, and that people here might also enjoy.

    p.s. He has also similarly entertaining and educational series for Dyson Sphere, Oxygen Not Included, Rimworld, and a bunch of other crafting/automation-style games too.

    Didn't aim to have the belts look like a rainbow but I really like it. I think on a future playthrough I may go out of my way to arrange the bus in Roy G. Biv order.


    My current main save, which I have "only" 30 hours in, I decided to ridiculously future-proof my train network from the start, and run 4-lane rails everywhere. Here is an example straight-line segment. I made that into a blueprint, with the power poles and signals very carefully lined up to make it tileable. The length between signals is sufficient to let me run 2 locomotive, 8 car trains if I want (currently they're all 1x4s though). Here's a T junction that lines up with it, I'm particularly happy with how this design turned out.


    Here is my late-game "lol come at me bro" biter defense wall, also tileable. Belt of uranium ammo is fed by burner inserters, which means this should keep firing even in a power outage (have I ever had a power outage long enough for that to be necessary? no, but that's beside the point). Behind that are flamethrower and laser turrets. The 3:1 ratio gives good overlapping fields of fire to the flamethrowers while keeping the power pole wiring simple and easily tileable.

    With all the weapons upgrades researched, this can mow down behemoth biters as fast as they come. Typically, I'll have the train outpost feeding the wall also have an artillery battery, and a fun pastime is to drop a couple shells in a bunch of biter camps, then watch them all swarm towards the wall.


    Here's "Oak Ridge", my most recent iteration of a nuclear processing design. Takes in uranium ore, refines it, saves up enough shiny uranium to start Kovarex, then makes nuclear powerplant fuel. Any excess shiny uranium once the power plant is satisfied gets turned into nuclear train fuel. Excess dull uranium is shipped by train to a separate outpost making uranium ammo.

    All are designed to take input belts on the right then scale to the left pretty easily. You can use a calculator to figure out ratios of machines making intermediate products to the final science packs, or just tack assemblers on as shortages happen.

    There's constant combinators on each belt as notes for myself of what materials to send in from the bus. In a few cases there's an X meaning "leave this side blank" (for example in grey science to combine a half-belt of steel with a half-belt of regular magazines).

    My typical setup is to have these feeding a "science bus" that runs parallel to my main bus then feeds all of them into a row of labs. I have a little belt combiner that reduces all 6 down to 3 belts each containing a half belt of one type of pack, which lets me feed the labs with just one long-handed inserter and two regular ones: https://i.imgur.com/nx7IVCr.png

    The blue line shows the electrical network, and since I electrify all my train lines as well as every defensive wall, you can see the structure of the "ring road" I've built, as well as the individual defensive outposts built at natural chokepoints.

    My main bus area (right side of the central cluster) is mostly idle right now, since I've exhausted the non-space-science tech tree, so pollution in that area is fairly low. The blob of pollution in the lower left is a nice big patch of uranium ore I recently started mining. The far lower right also has a crude oil patch just tapped. With the wall to hide behind, I'm getting much more aggressive about expanding outward and not caring if it wakes up the neighbors.

    Car each of crude oil, artillery shells (eventually), coal, and uranium ammo. Built just big enough for the resupply train to turn around, and to the side of the main lines so it's easy to send a train past the wall if I ever want to expand in that direction. Signaled by 3 combinators so that the resupply train will only come out if one or more of the supplies is running low. That feeds directly into the wall segments I previously posted.

    There's a nearby copper patch, so I pull ore from there (the 8 belts coming in from the right), and combine that with 8 belts coming off an ore train. I designed that 8-belt Y junction from scratch because I hadn't ever seen a blueprint library with one and thought it'd be a fun challenge. Really happy with how it turned out.     The ore feeds into speed-moduled electric furnaces (closeup...288 of them, which according to the magic calculator is able to saturate 8 blue belts out. Right now I'm combining that down to 4 for output to the train; later on I may split them out to have 2 trains able to load at the same time on parallel tracks.

      The "plot" (which almost doesn't matter at all) is that your spaceship crash-landed on an alien planet and you need to build a rocket and launch it into space in order to send for help. This is how you "win" the game.

      You start chopping down trees and mining coal, iron and copper by hand. From there you build machines that can do mining for you, smelt that ore into usable form, and use that to build more machines, which can build things like conveyor belts for transporting ore. As you progress the tech tree you eventually drill for oil, refine it into usable products like plastic and sulfuric acid, mine uranium, refine that into nuclear power plant fuel, etc etc. Eventually you've got flying robots building things for you and nuclear fuel powered trains carting materials around. Oh, and a giant robotic tarantula that can launch nuclear rockets.

      All of this produces pollution, which annoys the native wildlife of the planet (biters). If there's too much pollution, the biters go attack whatever's producing the pollution. This means you want to balance keeping your factory efficient and low-pollution (such as using nuclear instead of coal for power) as well as building out military tech so you can go out and kill the biter home bases, or defend yourself against the waves of attacks.

      I'm almost 300 hours in (which makes me a relative newbie compared to some of the long-time players - I only started playing a few months ago when 1.0 was released) and I still have yet to "win" by launching a rocket (though I've certainly progressed far enough that I could have, if I made it a priority). It reminds me of SimCity and other sandbox-style games where winning isn't really the goal.

    Single train station that tried to do virtually everything oil-related in one setup. Advanced oil processing, lubricant and cracking of heavy oil, production of rocket fuel for trains, plus plastic, sulfur and sulfuric acid. I planned ahead to produce explosives and batteries on-site as well, which I never ended up doing, but required me to build way more train stops than I ended up using.

    Uses advanced oil processing with the optimal 20:5:17 ratio. Since I'm no longer trying to produce lubricant or other byproducts, it removes the circuit & pump complexity I had to deal with when setting up Bhopal.

    If I build another one of these in the future I think I may expand it to 3 or 4 trains in & out, with a matching number of oil processing arrays. I'd also like to re-do the input & output piping to make it a bit more orderly, and perhaps add additional storage tanks (separate from the ones connected to each train for quick loading & unloading).

    Then, I have individual train stations which are fed with trains of petroleum plus other ingredients.

    The sulfur factory uses a couple of prioritized splitters to guarantee that of the 3 lines of sulfur, at least one will go into producing sulfuric acid, and one will fill up the train. The middle one will donate to sulfuric acid production if it has more than the train needs, and the line for sulfuric acid will donate its extra sulfur to the train.

    The plastic factory takes advantage of a nearby ~16 million coal patch and also outputs a train of coal for other sites that need it. If the coal runs out while I'm still using the factory, I can switch the station to import coal instead pretty easily.

    Still to be done is to delete Bhopal and replace it with dedicated factories for lubricant and rocket fuel. That's a low priority right now because my needs for them are small - my science production is idle while I work on building up infrastructure to mass-produce space science, so lubricant is pretty much only being used for blue belts, and rocket fuel is only being used to produce nuclear train fuel.


    The driving force behind all of that was to scale-up my plastic production, which in turn I'm doing in order to scale up red circuits.

    This was a fun design challenge, it led to me doing a hybrid belt & bot factory which I've never done before. Usually I use belts for almost everything except for the bot-mega-mall that I build as a Spidertron resupply depot.

    According to the magic calculator, you can output 2 blue belts of red circuits using 144 fully speed-moduled assemblers. That takes in 4 belts of green circuits and 4 belts of plastic, which works perfectly with my 4-car trains carrying each. It needs 10 belts worth of copper plates, which is more annoying. But the true bottleneck is needing 20 blue belts to carry the intermediate copper wire. There's no way I want to try to make that belt spaghetti work.

    Meanwhile, a total of 8 belts of copper are coming in (I may expand this to 12 / a third train station at some point), and feeding two arrays making copper wire. The copper wire is fed by logistic bots to the assemblers via requester chests. Figured out a neat splitter trick to allow the row of assemblers to be fed with all 5 lines of copper they want.


    And while building all of that stuff out, I naturally started running low on power. So I also built a new, larger nuclear reactor, took the time to make it clean and blueprintable, then went back and fixed up the old one to make it follow the same general design.

    The 2x2 is the smallest I bother building - due to neighbor bonuses, a single reactor produces only 40MW, while 4 in a group produces 480MW. The standard early-game power ratio of 1 pump / 20 boilers / 40 steam engines outputs 36MW, so when upgrading from one or more of those to nuclear, there's very little benefit in building just a 40MW reactor.

    Both use the same basic design I borrowed from the KatherineOfSky walkthrough - new fuel on one side of the belt, spent fuel on the other, constantly circulating, and with inserters & chests to allow logistic bots to handle the exchange.

      There's also Satisfactory, which is like a 1st-person Factorio. I haven't played that either, but I thoroughly enjoyed this YouTube series (which is annoyingly in reverse-chronological order) of a guy playing it with the goal of making a hideously inefficient and overcomplicated factory.
