This is an incredibly classy way to end the project, and the way I wish every unfinished game would end. Unfortunately, most studios don't have the behemoth that is Steam to pay the bills for free...

The servers valve needs for steam can probably host artifact with idle CPU ticks, even if playerbase skyrockets. They'll return with Artifact 3 if population sustains long term.

It's brought new players to the fold already, will be at the top of the free to play categories, and even I am downloading it to play for the first time.

Articfact Patch - 03/11/2021 This is actually an update, with balance changes. Leave it to Valve to update a game that they publicly ceased development on.

Pretty recently, they released an update to their very first game, Half-Life. (Just some bug fixes.) I guess that's just what happens with their "work on what you find interesting" culture.
