This is very cool, and I’m excited about it despite the fact that I definitely won’t get it. They seem to be interested in creating something that is essentially designed to be a cult classic from the very beginning.

I’m reminded of the Ouya not in the sense that it’ll be an underwhelming failure hardware-wise but more in the sense that, for a while, TowerFall was the coolest game out there that nobody could play because they didn’t have the device it ran on. I suspect this will have something similarly novel and praise-worthy that’ll be read about by many but played first-hand by only a few.

I expect that I’ll watch some cool recaps and commentary videos on YouTube about the Playdate from people who bought in and are exploring its games, but I won’t be getting one myself.

The ouya had quite a few killer party games on it. These days most of them are ported to other platforms although I don't think Bomb Squad made it off the platform.

I haven't really changed my opinion that much after the presentation, the games look fun, and it has that sort of homebrew chic of very simple games with simple design tools, and a focus on discovery and novelty over a compelling gameplay loop. And that's fine, especially in a market saturated with endless content, gatcha pulls and engagement farms. But $180 is a lot to ask for with boutique hardware, even if you have an excellent developer community. Reminds me of what was said in a previous thread about it being a lifestyle device, similar to something like the Light Phone. You are paying more for less and they are marketing a piece of mind that comes with it. And obviously it's not for everyone, but I'm not sure that it's for me either.

Would be cool to put some ebooks or news articles on it, and be able to crank scroll through them through a Pocket app or something similar. Comics and manga would be nice as well. Maybe a second generation with more apps might be worth it for the price, but then you would get away from the single function fun device.

This product isn’t marketed as the masses but at people with lots of disposable income who want something different to what everyone else has.

Both are designed by Teenage Engineering, so that tracks. Kind of reminds me of an Ouya, or a Raspberry Pi, in that it's a hobbyist product that you are buying for the community and the ecosystem, but the Ouya was a gimmick, and the Pi is far less of an investment.

It would be nice if there was a way to run these programs on a PC or a phone, maybe with a Bluetooth crank case so that none of those games would be lost to time if this does go the way of the Ouya, but I guess that's why the good Lord gave us emulators.
