I'm curious whether they feel a bit beat to the punch by the Steam Deck pulling focus for handheld consoles recently, or if that actually works as a booster for interest in their device.

I decided a while back that I wasn't going to preorder one, but now I'm waffling a bit on that decision.

Bumping this thread as a reminder to anyone interested: pre-orders will go live ~12 hours from now.

Also, my waffling turned out to be enough for a full breakfast, and as such I'm going back on my word: I actually am going to get one.

EDIT: I had the time zone all wrong. It goes up when it goes up.

Similar to the Steam Deck sales numbers leak, it turns out we have some data on Playdate sales based on the fact that Shopify uses sequential order numbers starting at 1001.

My preorder went through 10 minutes after they went live, and my order number is in the 11000s, which means they did 10K sales (half their initial inventory) in the first 10 minutes.

But also they were allowing two Playdates per order, so order numbers could be up to double the number sold. 11000 in 10 minutes would be the minimum sold units.

Ah, I didn't even think about the fact that you could order two. Good point.

I got mine ordered at the 8 minute mark. Thank you for making this thread to remind me about this. Their email to me got sent to me spam folder and I wouldn't have seen it until way later.

I was very impressed by their queuing system at first. Shop loaded quickly, I got added to the queue and was able to start shopping soon enough. However international shipping broke (not their fault) spewing out wrong error messages. That got resolved, but by then 2021 orders had been sold out. I received a „item out of stock“ error (even though they promised it won’t sell out) until I realized I had to remove and re-add the playdate to my cart (switching from the 2021 batch to the 2022 one).

Better error messages could’ve saved me a lot of frustration!

I'm in the US and ran into shipping errors as well. I was in the queue and got put through to the order screen very early (probably in the first minute or two of it going live), but I spent minutes trying to get the shipping working. I was worried refreshing the page was going to make me lose my spot, so I kept moving back and forth between the screen where I entered my info and the screen where shipping was calculated until it finally went through.

Sorry that you missed the first batch. That's frustrating.
