Jason Rohrer is one of the true indie game “auteurs” out there, each game a little art project. I fondly remember Sleep is Death, which was great but had a near-unplayable interface.

That increasing text length thing is so clever, I love everything about this.
I think a game like this would greatly benefit from a demo, letting us play one or 2 lives before deciding to spend 20 bucks on something
