He said he was told that the matters were classified “because it had to do with China.”

You know, with an emerging pandemic there is so much I'd be willing to forgive with any presidential administration. R or D, if you're at least trying, exhibiting basic literacy, half-ass executing on the advice of the scientific community, allocating a little funding where needed to make a show of it, then, okay. That's how low my standards have dropped. Even if you don't do anything meaningful to change or fix anything, I'll be proud of you for doing some goddamn thing. And hey, maybe you waited a couple weeks longer than you should have, or you didn't allocate quite enough resources somewhere—okay—pandemics and natural disasters are hard. Who wants to be in a position of power when stuff like that goes down? It's a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' sort of thing. I get it.

But when you gut the CDC and related departments, publicly care more about market performance than the fact that people are getting sick and dying, sit on your ass since January and double-down on COVID-19 being a hoax perpetrated by the media, claim that you understand the virus more than most because your blood relative was an MIT professor, etc. (feel free to add more to the list), then you need to be removed from office yesterday.

On the other hand, Americans are in an election year so perhaps this is something that is finally serious enough to get people to vote for someone else. Probably not though.

The biggest thing I miss about politics-as-usual is how non-cynical you could be. I absolutely agree with you here, though -- it just seems like we're on a slow train to crap town.
