And, of course, the United Kingdom is exempt. Because there's no coronavirus infections there.

On the one hand, no warning seems a bit extreme, but also 48hrs seems a bit much.

They would if they are Europeans who live in the US but are currently in Europe.

This sort of measure would probably have been much more helpful if it was enacted much earlier.

It doesn't seem to make any sense from a containment perspective, particularly given the UK exemption. It would appear primarily meant to be a petty attack on the EU. It's appalling that the US President would unilaterally use a global pandemic to promote his anti-EU stances.

Update: It appears that Trump was not particularly accurate in describing the ban. It applies to anyone who has been in the Schengen area within 14 days of planned travel to the US, not simply to flights from the Schengen area, so this at least makes a bit more sense from a containment perspective, though the UK exemption doesn't: the way he described it, flights connecting through Heathrow would have been fine. It also doesn't apply to cargo, which makes a bit more sense as well.

The ban applies to the Schengen area, which doesn't include the UK and Ireland (but does some non-EU countries like Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland). Note there have been cases in the UK and Ireland, as well as some other non-EU European countries like the Balkan states such as Serbia and Croatia. Never mind non-European countries like Japan and Brazil which, as far as I can find, have no such travel restrictions.

The most charitable interpretation I can give this is that it's a half-arsed measure; I'd really like to avoid seeking some political meaning behind this, but given what I know of Trump this is ... kinda hard.

Trump said that "The Media should view this as a time of unity and strength", which is hard to take as anything other than "Please stop criticising me" given his history with the media ("enemy of the people").

Here's how I see it: this is security theater. What really matters is how seriously ordinary Americans take coronavirus. Remember that half the country are Republicans, and many others are just not very proactive. A lot of things got moving today.

Trump may be bad at reading a teleprompter, but that's secondary. To first order, it doesn't matter what he said. It matters that the president said it.

It is unfortunate that so many travelers were inconvenienced for this theatrics, though.

Everything is about him. Natural disasters, the economy (when it's doing well), why not a pandemic too? Republicans are never above using tragedy to score some points.

Trump's coronavirus task force is reportedly awaiting 'research' from Jared Kushner before making an emergency declaration

Also Fox News has stopped dismissing CoronaVirus as "just the flu" and has started boasting of Trumps' "Extraordinary Measures" and economic "solution."

At least they are starting to take it seriously , I guess.

If it wasn't making them all richer and others suffer, I'd laugh at how stupidly fucking nepotistic the Trumps are.

Not sure why, but none of the articles I'm finding seem to mention the restriction was announced as applying to cargo as well. Here's the relevant section of the address:

And these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, but various other things as we get approval. Anything coming from Europe to the United States is what we are discussing.

Not a reputable source, but it appears that "cargo" was a slip-up. https://twitter.com/AnaSwanson/status/1237921160500830208

And Trump misspoke when he said the prohibitions would “not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, but various other things.” The official proclamation released after Trump spoke made clear it applies to people, not goods and cargo.

The White House has had to walk back three announcements from this speech now:

    • The ban doesn't apply to cargo/trade (see my other comment about that)
    • Insurers are only waiving copayments for testing, not treatment
    • Ban only applies to foreign nationals that were in the Schengen region within 14 days

Does anyone else feel that the scattershot, changing-by-the-minute-depending-on-who-is-talking approach that the US government is taking is just stoking fears unnecessarily and making it hard to get reliable, non politically biased information?

If anyone has good resources, I'd love to have a scientific, reliable source of information on what is going on.

So....Europeans will have to stop in Canada, Mexico, or one of the other neighboring countries before entering the US? Unless I'm mistaken, this is exactly the same thing that happened with the China travel ban, where Chinese people just flew to South Korea and Japan before coming to the US. Does this really help anyone? There's an additional layer of screening, but now people are taking unnecessary flights and lingering around airports they could've avoided. I'm interested to know if this is something that health experts are calling for or a political move from Trump.
