So, anecdata from Michigan. Doofus pulled his six grandkids out of school this week... and brought them to run loose in the YMCA swimming facility where all the old and disabled people have their classes.
Maybe don't do this? I know it's going to be very difficult to keep kids calm and entertained, but the weather is mostly warm enough to let them play freely outdoors where they're less likely to encounter vulnerable people.
Hello fellow Michigander!
I do feel for all the parents who now have to figure out how to manage kids. Even more so for those who can't afford to take time off work and can't work remotely.
But ya, maybe don't walk a disease vector right through the middle of a vulnerable population. .... Unless you just keep them in the pool for 2 weeks. Make use of that chlorine.
The instructors and class participants are still grumbling about the event, not just because of the disease risks. Indulgent granddad let his six boys run around, splash, throw things, yell and scream, fight, and ignore lifeguards to the point that they disrupted classes and frightened smaller kids out of the pool. Apparently, he told the instructor who complained to him, "Boys will be boys". He's not welcome to come back.
I don't know what people who have to take kids out of school are going to do, especially in places that don't have parks or other public facilities where they can play. Childcare facilities are bad enough for spreading disease at the best of times, assuming you can afford them. Outdoors is the best option, but that's still going to require responsible adult supervision.
Make that six states. West Virginia announced that it's schools are closed until further notice.
We also don't have any reported cases of COVID-19. Perhaps put some emphasis on the "reported" in that sentence. Regardless, it hasn't spread here much yet, and closing down schools now should seriously slow the spread.
Wisconsin too: Wisconsin to close all K-12 schools effective Thursday
I'm a little miffed that my little brother can swap over to online courses, my mom who teaches school gets three weeks and spring break, and I am going to work in a call center where we are packed in like sardines, we could easily work from home and have higher ups and special exemptions who do that on the regular, and our official word is, "don't be a problem, wash your hands, and are you open to travel to our underground secret bunker as part of our new disaster plan?"
Not our whole state yet, but the local school district in my county announced they are closing for three weeks starting Monday.
