A woman dies. How does her community pay tribute when they are social-distancing?
@buailtin:
Yesterday we buried a lovely woman. Due to #Covid19 there was no wake & our community couldn't enter the church. But the entire parish came out & lined the 2km road to graveyard to say goodbye to Betty Ryan. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine #WestKerry https://t.co/Sns99qUSad
Betty Ryan died in Ireland. Normally there would be a funeral and a wake and the community would have gathered to pay tribute. Covid-19 means the church is closed and wakes are not possible.
I found this tribute from her community incredibly moving, especially since they used Arvo Pärt's Spiegal im Spiegal.
Covid-19 is changing everything.
We'll just have to remember their names for the service afterward, and for engraving on the town memorial. I don't doubt that the last village where I lived, if the virus reaches it, will be almost completely depopulated.
