I'm surprised this isn't being discussed more. Big changes require powerful catalysts, and a pandemic qualifies as a powerful catalyst. I'm really curious what maneuvers the Chinese and Russian...

I think the reason why we're not discussing this is that this is has only become really, really apparent with Trump and the coronavirus the coronavirus now when the US has really been losing power for a while. The alliances the US forged to stop the USSR suddenly had no purpose as then brand new Russia went into crisis.

Bill Clinton didn't have much in the way of foreign policy past reacting to dictators and terrorists invading neighboring nations, bombing important places and pursuing weapons the US didn't want in the hands of such people. and establishing more trade deals, including with China This meant that not much in the way of growing the US's sphere of influence happened.

When George bush took the presidency and 9/11 spooked the nation into a war on terror against Iraq and Afghanistan both failed due to failed reconstruction post-occupation in Iraq and many, many reasons in Afghanistan people in the US became disinterested in foreign affairs which was great for a now Putin-led authoritarian as ever Russia and a soon-to-be incredibly powerful China.

Thanks to this the Obama administration was mostly focused on ending these wars and just fixing domestic issues. He even said Russia was a regional power, which is clearly a batshit statement today. This was exactly what the Chinese and Russian governments needed and so they've sown dissent in the west by using fake news and general nationalism/white supremacy, which has worked very well, most evidently in Poland and Hungary, and now that Trump, someone who literally has colluded with Russia is president he is basically weakening the US in their service.
