I think this article is about something that's happening, but based on polls I am optimistically assuming it's unlikely to result in a Republican consensus. The hard-core crazy group isn't going to go away, but it could shrink and look foolish to most.
I agree, except the culture war isn't bullshit. The only reason it's even a war is because a huge chunk of the country doesn't support equality for women, PoC, LGBT people, etc.
