Maryland, D.C. and Virginia on Monday barred residents from leaving home unless it’s absolutely necessary, joining a handful of other states and localities implementing “stay-at-home” orders in an effort to control the fast-spreading novel coronavirus, which has infected nearly 3,000 area residents.

With local health officials predicting that the peak period of infections in the region is still weeks away, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) chided area residents who continue to gather in groups, despite the closure of schools and most “nonessential” businesses.

As of Monday afternoon, 2,840 people in the region had been infected, with 51 deaths. Officials have repeatedly warned that area hospitals will soon be overwhelmed by a crush of new patients.

Many area residents have already been working from home for weeks, juggling that challenge with the demands of antsy children who are knee-deep in remote learning exercises launched by their schools.
