Weekly coronavirus-related chat, questions, and minor updates - week of May 11
This thread is posted weekly, and is intended as a place for more-casual discussion of the coronavirus and questions/updates that may not warrant their own dedicated topics. Tell us about what the situation is like where you live!
South Korea reported their largest daily case increase in over a month yesterday (still only 34 new cases), after hitting zero at one point. Someone with the virus spread it through at least 5 bars and nightclubs about a week ago, with at least 54 new cases linked to that so far.
This is what frightens me the most -- regardless of how much effort is put in by the general population to keep the virus at bay, all it takes is one person with bad judgement to ruin it for everyone...
It's not even necessarily something that you can blame on people having bad judgment. The virus can be transmitted by people before they have any symptoms, and a decent portion of people seem to get infected and never get any symptoms. They don't know they're sick, but they can still transmit it. Public places are reopening, and a lot of people are going to start going out again to restaurants, bars, etc. Some of those people will have the virus and infect others, often without even knowing.
The big thing is that, overall, nothing has fundamentally changed: we don't have a vaccine, we don't have a reliable treatment, and testing isn't available enough for people to be able to be confident whether they have it or not. A lot of people are definitely being more cautious, but a lot also aren't, and outbreaks similar to the initial ones will keep happening.
Nothing fundamental, but I would guess that medical systems are more prepared in various ways that don't make headline news?
South Korea's next two updates were 35 more cases on May 11 and 27 more cases on May 12.
From their overall update post today, that's now 102 cases linked to club visitors:
Houston, Texas.
Not much has happened, aside from some talk of re-opening parts of the state. I'm really not for it, to be honest, until we at least do mass testing or something. And the fact that we still don't have a vaccine for Covid-19 worries me. I understand that creating vaccines that time, but I wish there was something of a status update on the research.
Axios published some photos of people in Auckland, New Zealand lining up outside barber shops for when they'd be opening at 12:01 AM. Quite possibly the first time in history there's ever been a "midnight release" for a barber shop.
Traffic is down, but 100 mph speeds are seen on Beltway, police say
Folha de São Paulo (a Brazilian news agency) tweeted this in response to a statement our president made and it just really shows how little our president cares for truth, like Trump.
