Stay safe @mrbig, @Kuromantis, and any other Brazilian users we have here. I’m sorry your leader is being so callous.

The guys approval numbers are unreal so I believe we still have a lot to learn as a nation. 35 years of military dictatorship doesn't happen without support. Lots of people are still warming up to the idea of democracy, and very much enjoy the president because "he tells it like it is" and "won't turn my son gay" or whatever.

Things will get much worse before they get any better.

Speaking of, do you feel Lula's conviction being overturned and him potentially running again might help things, or only make them worse? I only know what I have read about him in the NA press, so am curious what you and the other Brazilians here actually think about him.

I believe Lula is a ray of hope. I do not think he's the second coming of the Christ, and he does have skeletons on his closet, but he is committed with the betterment of people's lives as demonstrated by basically eradicating poverty throughought the country through numerous iniciatives.

Besides, Lula, with all it's flaws, is an actually fully functioning human being governed by reason. That used to be the rule, but in 2021 seems to be a premium.

That's generally the sense I got about him even from the NA press (even though everything I have read did tend to focus a lot more on his scandals than the positive things he did), but I wasn't sure how accurate my feeling on him was. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

The north american media looks at the condemnations from their point of view, but the Brazilian reality is more complex. The Operation Car Wash was illegal from the start with a judge that acted as a prosecutor and the condemnation was made with flimsy evidence. That is documented. There are recordings. It is clear to me that Lula is guilty of something, but the entire process against him was overtly political and full of holes.

And the same judge that put Lula in jail was subsequently a minister in the government his decision helped put in power...

Nuance like that is not something you'll see on Last Week Tonight's hot takes.

IIRC, @cdrpa is one of them. Either way, it sucks we had to pay this dearly for electing bozo, and I'm still not sure how much will this actually harm him electorally, much less his ideals.
