Our bodies do not cope well with being indoors for extended stretches. I recently learned being outside > 1 hour a day can negate a lot of the nearsightedness problems that arise from kids doing schoolwork.
I find it funny how so much scientific research has been done that ultimately just confirms that my great-depression era grandma's wisdom was spot-on.
That in turn brings me full circle to how much of our wealth is being spent solving problems created by our wealth.

Folk knowledge is one thing but this is specific research into dementia and Alzheimer's disease, which is a truly terrible condition that 100% deserves deep and careful scientific research. Study into it has been fraught recently and many pathways are worth exploring formally. A world where we understand the actual mechanisms of Alzheimer's well enough to prevent or cure it reliably would be a better world.
Not to mention those who may have issues with absorption, such as women going through menopause as mentioned in the paper, or people dealing with the intestinal damage from celiac disease. My celiac-having, ovary-having, long-wintering ass really appreciates these scientists!
Your comment made me think of Ivan Illich's book Tools for Conviviality, which has a lot say about the cycle of new "developments" inventing problems that require more "development" to solve....

Disappointed by the title. Should be 'gender'. Came here hoping to learn how more sex can boost my Vit D levels. But apparently, only helps if you do it outside in the sunlight.

Oh by all means, I mean not to disparage...this is good research.
It is good to understand the 'why' and 'how' behind the folk wisdom.

It was a hat tip to that, yes. A good read.
