Despite Republican opposition, citizen-led abortion measures could be on the ballot in nine US states

I’m proud of my fellow Americans for this. It would be an absolute joy to go from losing Roe to having dozens of different laws protecting abortion rights instead.

I would prefer one law to protect them all.

It's like condoms and birth control. If one method of protecting you from unwanted pregnancies fails, it's nice to already have a second layer of defenses.

Been seeing a lot of forced birth protesters around here lately this week near our planned parenthoods. Unfortunately I left my bricks at home that day so I couldn't counter protest properly while I was driving by.

I wish America had a real left party but alas, our bed has been made and we must lie in it. Things are improving but there is a long, steep hill to climb. Much work lies ahead.

The Dems did not have such an opportunity. Since 1994, they’ve only had a filibuster proof majority once (2009-2010, when priority was passing the Recovery Act and the ACA) and only then for six months or so. Even if they’d had a majority, the party had numerous pro-life Democrats in the Senate that would’ve tanked such chances. That goes back even further.

Sorry if that came off as hostile, I just feel like I was being factual and pragmatic about the situation.

How in the Bible-thumping fuck does this sentiment make a lick of God damned sense? Putting roadblocks in the way of citizen initiatives is not protecting debate. It's the exact opposite, in fact.

“Even though we have a 60% threshold [in Florida], if you have the financial resources, you can get pretty much anything on the ballot you want,” he said. “That’s not good for Floridians because that doesn’t allow for debate.”

For fascists, "doesn't allow for debate" is code for "we didn't authorize this debate to take place". They'd have no concern whatsoever with a ballot initiative they think they'd win, they only...

FWIW, I'm in Florida and I signed a voting thing to get abortion rights on our ballot last weekend. Here's to hoping we can make it.

Contemporary republicans do not value democracy.

Come to vote for bodily autonomy, stay to vote out would be fascists.
