The sad pattern I see in both cases is a group is marginalized and insular, and as a result they're more likely to take advice from anti-vax doctors and scientists who are (rightfully so) marginalized from the scientific community. Then an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease happens, and it gets interpreted as confirming the worst pre-existing stereotypes of that marginalized group.
