So this article is about 10% Trump saying "NHS needs to be on the table", and about 90% of this:

Jeremy Hunt, the former health secretary, also ruled it out this week, saying: “I can’t conceive of any future prime minister, for any party, ever agreeing that we would allow NHS procurement to be part of trade talks, because the NHS as a publicly run, publicly owned institution is part of our DNA.”

I have to side with the 90% here, I cannot imagine how any British politician would pitch importing any bit of the US's incredibly overpriced, unfair, bloated healthcare system and remain in office, even if there is some sector we actually do better here in the US the stigma alone is a deal killer.

What I mean to say is that the same players behind Trump were behind Brexit. Everyone was shocked, but should we have been really?

I truly hope that this open comment from Trump galvanizes the public to protect NHS.

Well, from what I can see public approval of the NHS has been falling recently, but is still around 53% approve, 30% disapprove (Fig. 1). Which sounds not so great, until you see that those numbers are flipped for American opinion of the US healthcare system. Not sure if there are numbers out there for UK opinion of US healthcare, would be interested to see.

Compare that with the essentially 50/50 split on public polling data pre-Brexit, and Brexit seems way more likely than a privatized NHS does at the moment. Lord help you all in the UK if the propaganda train really gets rolling on privatization though :p

People don't seem to realise that there is nothing to prevent US companies taking over English healthcare right now. Everything that needs to be in place for this to happen is already in place, and was since the Lansely reforms (and probably before then).

An American company who wants to sell meds into the NHS is welcome to do so, they just need to be cheaper than the existing suppliers. An American company who wants to provide hospital services is welcome to do so, they just need to get commissioned.

There are plenty of providers who aren't NHS providers but who provide NHS services to NHS patients.

See, for example, all the Priory Group hospitals which are private hospitals offering NHS treatment, paid for by NHS England or CCGs. See also LiveWell SouthWest - a large trust that provides NHS services as a community interest company, not an NHS Trust.

The reason US companies don't do it is because they've looked at it, and decided they can't do it for the money on offer from NHS England.

Most people (even in England, and even some English politicians) don't know how the NHS works. This video is a useful guide: https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/audio-video/how-does-nhs-in-england-work

Can anyone explain why this might be a remotely good idea for Fuckface to persue? He has to know they'll never go for it.

While the Tories are still in power, anything is up for grabs.

I’ve watched my parents’ healthcare with a very close eye in the USA, and I’ve decided that the modern healthcare system is designed to transfer boomers’ wealth out of the family and into shareholders’ wallets. It’s working phenomenally well. After mom a stroke, bankruptcy quickly followed. It was a full reset on their wealth, which in turn is less money passed on in the family. I’m sure that’s somehow millennials’ fault :/
