What a thoughtful piece. It reminded me of a conversation I had some years ago about giving to people on the streets. I had never had a problem giving to people who had something to offer, for example there used to be this guy who's schtick was "Nickle or dime for a riddle or rhyme," and I would often give him a few bucks for one or the other. Then a friend offered up this, "What about those in need that have no social graces, why are they less deserving?" I guess success on GoFundMe falls into similar problems.

I did walk away from the article a bit angry that paying for medical care might boil down to a popularity contest. That being able to tell a compelling story somehow made one more deserving to get funding. It's not the fault of the platform. Thank goodness it exists, but it should not have to exist for that purpose.
