Unlike the known link between cobalt (a metallic element required as a trace nutrient, but toxic in larger doses) and human heart disease, there's no toxin identified in the dog cases yet. There's a highly suggestive link to "grain-free" products which contain legume proteins (peas or lentils).

After the melamine scandals eleven years ago, there's still no comprehensive regulatory testing or disease surveillance for new dietary products in animals or humans.
