Daily coronavirus-related chat, questions, and minor updates - April 2

Lol, someone hasn't been watching the news, holy cow! Rock am Ring claims they're still on. There's not a snowballs chance in hell we can have a
5000080000 strong disease vector with national and some international travel to spread it all around. Super not traceable too. Not happening. See also this for a german explanation of why not. In short: because even relaxing the current situation is kind of out of the question unless we want to wait for herd immunity. The more plausible solution is to get back from mitigation to containment, i.e. get back to 1000 or so active cases. Then we can talk about getting public life back on track in a way where we can trace cases. Even if we get to 1000 cases or less by june (roughly 100 cases daily, not 4000), hard to trace mass congregations will remain an unacceptable risk for a long time to come - basically, until this thing is easily treatable or easily preventable.Privatize gains, socialize losses. I have a bit more understanding given the current situation being a relatively freak incident, not just some financial market bullshittery. I'd rather we just buy it outright, but not with this government.
ETA: I can't say enough how stupid a festival would be in june. Assume we have 1000 cases in germany in early june. That's optimistic, but that's kind of the point, because it'd be worse anyway. Anyway, 1000 active cases, with 100 recovering daily and 100 or so new infections. Depending on how quick we are with contact tracing, You'd expect ~200 unaware cases out there, probably spreading it. Sounds like a 20% chance of having someone at the festival infected and not knowing it. How many infections could we expect at a festival? Closely packed, lots of drinking, questionable hygienic conditions and lots of drinking in questionable hygienic conditions. Lots of high-volume singing probably helps too. Expect hundreds, I'd say, looking at similar smaller-scale events (churches, choir practice, the like). Maybe thousands. Congratulations, you've just multiplied the number of new cases in germany by something like... 3? 10? And you've also made tracing these contacts almost impossible. Was it worth it? The only way this is happening is if we can get mandatory quarantining of all participants going. Just, you know, pack enough supplies to last you 2 weeks in the wild and then just walk home, camping in the woods as you go or something. Stay away.
Yeah, I mean, it's not going to happen. Just isn't. Relevant authorities will just say nuh-uh and that'll be that. I've added a guess of how bad it would be into my other comment.
People often reflexively say "private gains, socialize losses," ignoring that for a public company, you can see how much the shareholders lost.
Looks like on the London stock exchange, Thomas Hook Group used to trade at around 200 and now it's 25?
We'll have to see after this is all over. I suspect it'll be a remarkable recovery. But I'm not an expert by any stretch.
Is this just using a crisis for political gain, or does it actually have some reasoning?
My mom was tested for coronavirus but won't have the results for 7+ days.
My company is planning to furlough the 90,000+ associates soon as we don't have any income coming in with all the store closures.
The company has cut the salary for anyone director level or above, with the executive team taking 100% pay cut until a good portion of the company re-opens.
Its not all doom and gloom though. On my personal side, everything is going well. I did get my merit increase this year, a bonus, and the best performance review you can get at my company.I'm keeping up with my chores, exercising regularly, and have cut all the junk food out of my diet outside of peanut butter sandwiches and coca-cola.
FYI Peanut Butter sandwiches aren't really junk food. Medium quality or better peanut butter has loads of nutritional value, and if you use decent bread, then you're just fine. Avoid jelly or butter, and there's no real problems with having a sandwich.
Soft drinks are the devil though.
Fortunately I am make my own bread each week.
Unfortunately I eat Skippy peanut butter with jelly. Blackberry, blueberry, grape, apple. I will also throw in a PB and banana with honey. I probably have eaten thousands of these since I was kid lol
This happened a few weeks ago, so it is not new news, but my everyone in my company was issued a 10% pay cut to help keep costs down. Sounds like my boss really doesn't want to lay people off. I don't know how long we can keep this up though. Our main customers are hotels and it sounds like they are closing like mad.
I am not, I am in the States. The only help that I am aware of that we can receive are the stimulus checks that are supposed to be coming our way. I believe my wife and I both qualify for them.
Michigan closed all public school buildings for the rest of the 2020 school year, and individual districts are on their own for how they want to continue out the school year. My mom teaches K-12, and for some reason, kids out of school are incredibly hard to get a hold of by their teachers, so a whole lot of distance learning plans are up in the air.

A lot of the official stats (e.g. my favorite, the Johns Hopkins map) have crossed over 1 million total confirmed cases globally now, as well as over 50,000 deaths.
It also looks like the US's rate of testing has pretty much stalled out over the last week, so they likely have far more cases than they're reporting still and just aren't able to test enough to detect them.
Nebraska is past 200 cases now. There have only been 3000-some tests performed and the governor said that it will be 'months' before testing is done in any reasonable amount. Given how reactive the state has been I anticipate the numbers going way up in reality, if not in what's reported.
Quick numbers update (over the last day, hour length varies wildly and city level data is from a separate source):
According to this article there are 23k tests available right now. That's not enough and it's probably why they said they were only gonna test intense cases, which is probably why our death rate is at 5%.
