The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, is one of the great treasures in the world and was created under the Will of Henry Huntington who provided that his legacy shall provide free access to his collections, if I recall correctly the words "no admission fee" are used in his Will. Nonetheless, the staff convinced the Superior Court to allow them to charge admission fees. Outrageous and goes to show that no matter what you specify in a Will concerning a charitable purpose, someone can come along and modify it. The epidemic of paid staff in our eleemosynary institutions furthering their salaries is a problem society has not cured. Having open doors is a refreshing step in the right direction. State Attorney Generals are charge with overseeing charitable institution and those offices simply cannot devote the resources necessary to fully benefit the public -- they only act in egregious circumstances such as embezzlement.
