I'm not really sure what the cause of all of this is. There's just too many factors that seem to play into this for me to think reading is that important. I don't doubt it can be beneficial, but is it the reason boys don't go to college or do worse in school?

I looked at their article about decreased men going to college and they address it as a role model problem and boys not seeing the value in college. Which I can completely understand, I'm in college and I'm about to have a degree that isn't worth too much. Yet there's a huge shortage of electricians in Colorado (where I live) and I know for a fact you can make a very good middle income doing that. So while the article frames it as a sort of illogical decision, I don't know if it is.

Even this reading thing could come down to how kids spend their time. Gaming is more acceptable for boys and so perhaps they do that instead of reading. Or maybe it's what other articles have talked about and boys don't get the chance to exercise during the day and this interfered with their ability to focus and learn compared to girls. Alternatively maybe it's the same as handwriting and teachers have lower implicit expectations of boys. Continually holding them to a lower standard than their female peers leading to the results we see here. There are a lot of reasons boys can choose not read and do worse than girls. I'm not convinced if we found the reason boys don't read and fixed it that we'd see any significant changes.

If anything this article and the others show just how poor we are at educating and understanding the needs of people. If there is a root to all of society's ills I'm sure it lies in the classroom.
