This is a trend that hasn't really gone away, either. African Americans still order a tremendous amount by catalogue, especially compared to other demographics. Before my father retired a few years ago he was President/CEO of Specialty Commerce Corp., a beauty product/fashion focused multi-channel direct marketing company (retail through websites, direct mail, catalogues, by phone, etc) and black people made up a significant portion of their customer base in the US, Canada and the UK. Traditional Black Church clothes and accessories in particular seem to be still ordered almost exclusively via catalogue, largely because there aren't really any "mainstream" retailers that cater to that market.
