The fact that natural creative exploration by kids is billed as "chaos" says everything you need to know about the status, priorities, and trajectory of contemporary education in America. I get that the word was probably chosen simply because of its alliteration with "control", but even so, it's prescient.
That said, I realize this is little more than a pithy take on the issue and doesn't really contribute anything meaningful. It was my first thought upon reading the article, followed by further pessimism which I was beginning to type out at length.
Instead of posting yet another morose and self-important rant about teaching here, however, I think I'm instead going to stop commenting on education articles for a while. I don't want to pigeonhole myself on Tildes as "that unhappy teacher," and I am also realizing that I'm too disillusioned to give fair commentary. I'm too close to the topic, and we don't have a lot of other teachers here who can check and counterbalance my claims. As such I'm going to try to stop being the solitary stormcloud in all of these education threads. It's not fair to the topic, and it ends up putting me in a worse mood anyway.
