I struggled with putting this in ~science or ~tech but as this more deals with the philosophical quandaries of (hu)man and machine I believe this should go here. The article examines commentary and thoughts of Marshall McLuhan (from the '60s) and how it may apply to now and the future.

Physiologically, man in the normal use of technology (or his variously extended body) is perpetually modified by it and in turn finds new ways of modifying his technology. Man becomes, as it were, the sex organs of the machine world, as the bee of the plant world, enabling it to fecundate and evolve ever new forms.

This report on McLuhan's suggestions about the possibility of a global consciousness is so broad as to be semi-spiritual? What drew you to it at this moment? I accept his writings as prescient,...

Agreed, more prescient than prophetic by far. I don't agree with everything said, but several points were just purely interesting to me.

I was just reading “The medium is the massage” a couple of days ago, and it’s mind-boggling how perceptive and prescient McLuhan was. I also really enjoyed the presentation in the book, and wonder whether dry text (Understanding media) zaps some of the soul from McLuhan’s writing. I plan to give it another go now.
