I’d imagine our ability to treat HIV also factors in. No one’s going to be relaxed about a potential HIV infection, but there must be shades of gray in the medical system’s feelings towards infected blood between the extremes of “death sentence” and “completely solved with miracle drugs”.

In California even a woman that has had sex with a man that’s had sex with a man can’t donate blood for a few months.

[Private bloodmobile services are a U.S. thing. They've supplanted the Red Cross in many areas, and I suspect they're paranoid about liability.]

EDIT: I did that very American thing where I read news about another country and then immediately made it about mine. Apologies, Canadian friends! I'm trying to get better about that, and I'm happy for y'all.

Happy to see this, even though it doesn't apply to me personally in the US. I'm hoping we follow suit soon though.

I totally understand why the MSM criterion exists and don't think it's the baldly homophobic policy I often see it portrayed as in discussions online, but I do think it's a very blunt instrument when something more precise will do. My husband and I are both HIV-negative and have been in a mutually monogamous relationship for over 10 years. We are not high-risk donors, but we're currently being filtered out of the pool as if we were.

I would love to be able to donate blood. I've never done it before.

No need to apologize, or ~~ out your original comment, IMO. I typically dislike when Americans on social media go out of their way to compare events here in Canada (or elsewhere in the world) to their own local politics, but that's not really what you did. You were simply providing context (you being American) before expressing your opinion on such donation restrictions (which mirror my own, BTW), and a desire to donate blood yourself (which is admirable!). :)
