So this is obviously a very political topic, but I thought it was tildes-appropriate and this group is sorely in need of more posts.

Fundamentally I don’t with the perspective that Israel’s LBGT friendly in order to get PR points. It seems like a convoluted logic used by someone who disagrees or dislikes Israel in order to justify being dismissive of them. I don’t think I’ve ever heard another country accused of being egalitarian as a PR stunt. It’s just a weird line of reasoning.

But to address the meat of the protesters argument, “hey it’s great we can protest but people close to us are protesting and risking their lives while we’re safe.” He’s right. Except I’m not sure any of the protesters in Tel Aviv are burning tires, slinging rocks, etc. (and I would be surprised if any of them were affiliated with/coordinated by Hamas, an organization internationally listed as a terrorist organization who actively attempts to murder Israeli civilians and has targeted a yellow school bus with a shoulder fired missile in the past.)

One could easily make a chicken or the egg argument for the violence (did the protesters start burning tires to cover violence, or did they start burning tires to obscure them being targeted; welcome to the core of the Israel-Palestine conflict, yay!), but one can’t argue that the protests themselves are fundamentally the same.

So while Israeli citizens having a gay pride march in Tel Aviv are safe, and the protesters in Gaza are not... I don’t think they’re directly comparable, because they’re not the same.

    Edited for spelling.
