What song(s) so you consider to be your personal LGBT anthem(s)?
They don't have to be anthems in the strict sense of the word. Any type or genre is fair game.
I'm interested in hearing about any songs that helped you connect with or express your identity. It can be something overtly intended to represent LGBT individuals or narratives, or it can simply be something with an abstract theme that resonates with your experiences.
These are probably pretty obvious ones, but I still love them. They are not just great LGBT anthems but just damn good classic songs in general.
Queen - I Want To Break Free
Queen - Under Pressure
George Michael - Freedom! ’90
Elton John - I'm Still Standing
Cyndi Lauper - True Colors
p.s. Here's my favorite Live version of True Colors (ft. Pat Monahan from Train). The whole Decades Rock Live! Cyndi Lauper & Friends concert is utterly fantastic. If you are a fan of hers and can track a copy down I highly recommend watching it. ;)
Here's an unusual one.
After my parents found out I was gay, things were... somewhat tense, shall we say. At the time, I was a big fan of Billy Joel. On days when I had the house to myself, I used to put his song 'My Life' on the stereo and shout along with the lyrics of the chorus:
Of course, I didn't have the guts to say that to their face! (Until a few months later...)
A year later, I had discovered the local gay scene, and a new song became my anthem: "So many men, so little time". ;)
I've had other personal anthems over the years, but they weren't specifically connected to me being gay.
Im old and its super cliche but George Michael - Freedom!
Personally I tend to think of Most Girls · Hailee Steinfeld, Girls Like Girls · Hayley Kiyoko, and Girls Just Want to Have Fun · Cyndi Lauper
This thread wouldn't be complete without Ezra Furman's brilliant Body Was Made. It's been in my playlists since I first heard it.
Take Me to Church has always been a good one for me. Not because it's about LGBT topics. It's more about bucking off traditions to me.
And of course as a trans masculine individual... I'll Make a Man Out of You
