What an odd thing to pick out as newsworthy... is cameraman a notably homophobic occupation?

It also struck me as odd until I saw the domain name and investigated further. This is a site dedicated to just such news so it's perfectly inline for them. And bravo to them for having such a site.

My thoughts exactly, and it's the US, not the middle east. This kind of obsession is borderline fetishistic.

Yeah, fuck this news outlet for trying to help further reduce the stigma of coming out and normalize societal acceptance of a formerly (and still) marginalized and persecuted class of people! /s

As if it is possible to deny him this job because of his sexual orientation in the US. Once a baker refused to make a cake, and we've all seen how that turned out. So why celebrate something that can't be prevented under current legal system? And how exactly his orientation affects his work as a camera operator? Is the resulting footage too fabulous for Superbowl to be used?

And we have also recently seen gay nightclubs get targeted by mass shooters, LGBT teen suicide rates still significantly higher than their heterosexual counterparts due to harassment, bullying, abuse and even parental disownment upon their coming out, and legislation designed to reduce or even outright remove the rights of LGBT individuals getting passed around the country (thankfully so far only to be shot down by the higher courts, but even that's not a guarantee any longer with the recent Republican SCOTUS appointments!).

That's why coming out stories like this, celebrating even these small victories, are beneficial and I would argue still very much necessary; they give LGBT people (like myself) a glimmer of hope that things are still slowly changing for the better and remind us that not everyone hates us, even in the hyper-masculine and historically hostile to LGBT sphere of professional sports.
