This percentage is kinda interesting to me—it seems almost shockingly low. I guess as a gay person I just tend to do a good job finding and collecting LGBT friends in a way that skews my perspective, because it feels like way more of the world is occupied with them.

To me it seems shockingly high. I know that Kinsey's original report said that approximately 10% of men had some inclination towards homosexual acts - that's where that old "1 in 10" figure came from - but that's a much larger group than people who would actually consider themselves to be gay, bi, or transgender. More contemporary polls generally leaned closer to around 1%, but that was also considering there was more pressure to stay in the closet in those days, so I figured it had to be somewhere around 2-3%. 4.5% is a huge jump.
Edit: Given that this poll says we are mostly young, it stands to reason to assume that the reason for it is because we have succeeded in removing much of the stigma. This seems like a really good time to be young in this country.
Here's an interactive infographic from the authors of the report the article is based on.

There's geographical concentration too. For example, in Atlanta or Seattle, LGBT people are more like 15% of the population.
Yeah, this study has D.C. at nearly 10% too.
So more like 9% of the total population if you extrapolate from under 35.
