Shocker, the racist ethnostate is also, surprisingly, against the gays. Who could have predicted this?

extrapolating the entire nation's viewpoints based on one dude who is basically the jewish equivalent of an evangelical christian (orthodox-but-might-as-well-be-ultra-orthodox, runs an ultranationalist party whose stance on gay marriage isn't even fully supported by his own party) is probably not the best idea. most israelis (and most likely, most MPs in the knesset) are in support of things like same-sex marriage, and peretz is an outlier even netanyahu's not really willing to stand by on this. most of the lack of progress on LGBT rights in israel seems to be the result of political arithmetic.

Did you even read the opening paragraph?

Israel’s education minister voiced support on Saturday for so-called gay “conversion therapy”, drawing a disavowal from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose government’s religious-rightist tilt has worried liberals a home and backers abroad.

      And, further down:

Shortly after the interview aired at the end of the Jewish Sabbath, Netanyahu said he spoke to Peretz for “clarification”.

“The education minister’s remarks regarding the pride community are unacceptable to me and do not reflect the position of the government that I head,” the premier said in a statement.

The Prime Minister of Israel has overruled his Education Minister - who comes from a right-wing junior partner in the governing coalition. This is business as usual for us here in Australia, where the Liberal Party are continually having to contradict the stupidity that comes from their junior coalition partner, the National Party. Just because the right-wing crazies in government say something off the cuff, that doesn't make it official government policy.

This guy is a troglodyte and provocateur with a barely functioning frontal cortex. Posting what he says as if it's representative is akin to posting the preaching of any lunatic imam, conservative MP, or an orange president as if they're representative.

A representative of the state isn't the same as a representative of the people.

He is a minor representative of the state, unlike Trump. Israel is a parliamentary system. Rafi Peretz's party got 5 seats, or 4% of the vote. The only reason he was given the ministry of education is because this government doesn't matter as it has voted for its own dissolution about a month after the elections. The next elections are in September and everything will be shuffled again.
