It might be a bit cliche, but the movie that made me come to terms with being gay was Brokeback Mountain. I saw so much of who I was back then. The loneliness of the mountain was a reflection of what my life felt like that whole time. It was also the first time I saw something that legitimized gay love as something that can be as intense and long-lasting as it can be for straight people. Even though it’s full of struggle and rejection, it still showed me a life of such freedom and truth that I wanted to live that way.

And just as important growing up was Queer as Folk. It showed me how important it was to fight for my rights, and more importantly that there were going to be people who would back me up - I didn’t even know where to begin looking before I started watching the show. It was what gave me the courage to actually come out publicly even though I was afraid of becoming homeless after. It showed me that it was the only way I would be able to grasp the life that I wanted to live.

I did, and now I am living that life and I am so happy that I’ve found myself tearing up. I have gone through so much, and now I find that I have so many treasures that can never be stolen.

You know it wasn't until reading this article that I realized how I really don't have good examples of movies which helped define love in the way I had hoped to see it. There was a fantastic article recently about a woman who chose to teach all the classics as black to their kid - rebranding the ethnicity of the characters so entire worlds existed where black people weren't the minority, given her children the ability to empathize and connect with all of the characters and not just the ones they felt matched their representation. This makes me think of that article, and how little queer and trans representation there really was in my childhood. I didn't really have queer role models to emulate or borrow mannerisms or even aspire to. Seeing the increasing representation through many of the films being more contemporary gives me hope for the next generations.
